Townhouses and condominiums reign supreme in South Main
Modern condominiums and townhouses inside gated communities are common in South Main. Balconies overlook small greenspaces, where neighbors gather to catch up, while tiny dogs get out the zoomies. The first residential complexes began construction in the early 1980s, mainly consisting of three- and four-story stucco condominiums. In the early 2000s, developers created a few small HOA communities with rows of narrow, three-story single-family townhouses with rooftop patios on the southern half of the neighborhood. More recently, those options expanded to include large luxury condominium complexes with central quads and resort-style pools. Prices range from $80,000 for a modest one-bedroom studio to $450,000 for a three-bedroom townhouse in the new Buffalo Point development, but most available homes are listed for close to $250,000. Local Realtor Deborah Rose Miller of Rose Realty says home inventory in much of the Houston area is low, especially around the 610 Loop, so it's not uncommon for residences to sell quickly.Locals often travel north to shop at Rice Village
Target and Kroger can be found a few blocks north on Main Street, while various retailers dominate Rice Village just a 4-mile drive north. "Rice Village's little shops and restaurants have had an evolution," says local Realtor Lisa Baer of Martha Turner Sotheby's International Realty. "A lot of large chains have gone in and replaced the mom and pop shops that used to be there." Baer notes that the Rice Village Farmers Market is major draw, especially for its wide range of food trucks. National chain restaurants are easy to find in South Main. Whataburger and Shipley Do-Nuts offer on-the-go meals, while Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen is a premier destination for Cajun-style seafood staples. Pappasito's Cantina, a regional chain known throughout Houston, is another popular eatery in the neighborhood.Football has a storied history at Madison High
Students in South Main are served by the Houston Independent School District. Shearn Elementary School earns an overall grade of C-minus from Niche, while Pershing Middle School gets a B-plus rating. Madison High is the area high school, which earns a C grade and offers a competitive athletics program that produced former NFL star Vince Young.South Main sits close to the sprawling Hermann Park
South Main doesn’t offer many green spaces within walking distance, but the surrounding city is home to plenty of outdoor activities. Wildcat Golf Club is a top spot to book weekend tee times, while RISE Soccer Club in McGovern Park offers competitive adult soccer leagues. Westwood Park has plenty of playgrounds and softball fields, while the pedestrian trails along the Brays Bayou River are popular among early-morning runners. Additionally, Hermann Park is the jewel of the Houston park system, featuring a Japanese Garden, outdoor theater and zoo located only minutes north on Main Street. And just north of South Main is NRG Stadium, the home of the NFL's Houston Texans.South Main offers easy access to "The Loop"
South Main isn't the most walkable neighborhood, so vehicle access is advised. Luckily, South Main offers stellar access to major roads and highways, including Main Street and the 610 Loop, which circles downtown Houston 9 miles north. The METRO bus also features stops along Main Street and Bellfort Avenue, making for a reliable mode of public transportation. The roads can get quite congested, especially on Sundays during football season, but travel is mostly painless under ordinary circumstances.
