An aptly named medical community
On the eastern edge of Warren, the Hospital area is a predominately residential community with two large medical centers that serve the community’s healthcare needs and respond to emergencies throughout the Trumbull County region. Known mainly for the Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Mercy Health St. Joseph Warren Hospital, the city’s Hospital neighborhood marks where the urban landscape starts giving way to suburbs with larger, more expensive single-family homes, highway retail corridors and large shopping centers with big box stores, franchise restaurants and low-slung professional offices. “It’s pretty close to downtown Warren. There’s a lot of older homes that are more affordable,” says April McGahagan, a local Realtor and manager of the Howard Hannah office in neighboring Howland. “There’s also some older beautiful homes on Market Street as well as lawyers and doctor offices and funeral homes.”
An eclectic mix of homes around the neighborhood's medical centers
In the western side of the neighborhood close to downtown, older Craftsman-style bungalows, Cape Cods and Colonial-inspired homes from the early 20th century are arranged in a typical city grid pattern and range from $15,000 to $180,000, depending on size and condition. Homes generally span less than 1,500 square feet, though some can have up to 2,000 square feet with a fenced backyard or finished basement. Past the hospitals, in more contemporary areas developed since the 1950s, more spacious ranch-style homes, split levels and some older stately Colonial-style homes range from $150,000 to $400,000.

Convenient shopping and dining on Youngstown Road
Youngstown Road forms the neighborhood’s southern boundary and serves as the primary commercial shopping area for the community. A mix of franchise restaurants, local eateries, dollar stores, used car dealerships and vehicle service centers line the road, providing a convenient place for residents to eat and run errands. Farther down, the road passes the Eastwood Mall and a large shopping center district with a Meijer supermarket and even more restaurants and national retailers, including Hobby Lobby, Bass Pro Shops and Home Depot.

Star-studded alumni hall of fame at the High School
Students in the community can attend the PreK-8 Williard School in the Warren City School District. Built in 2009, it is the second-largest school in the division and serves nearly 1,000 students. With a 17 to 1 student-teacher ratio, the school earns a C rating from Niche. From there, students can advance to Warren G. Harding High School, which Niche gives a C-plus rating. Established in 1926, the school includes a deeply rostered alumni hall of fame that includes notable athletes, corporate executives, astronauts and changemakers, such as former Fox News Network CEO Roger Ailes, women’s suffrage movement leader Harriet Taylor Upton and Super Bowl champion wide receiver Mario Manningham.

Stop and smell the roses at Perkins Park
Near the Mercy Health hospital campus, residents can take their dogs on a walk or bring their children to the playground at Circle Park, a small green space nestled in one of the more expensive residential sections of the Hospital area. Heading into downtown, folks can also stroll along the Mahoning River or admire the rose garden at Perkins Park. Along Market Street, members and guests of the Trumbull Country Club can play golf or tennis before settling in the club’s upscale casual restaurant.
Warren and the Hospital neighborhood are located close to major interstates.
Walkable to downtown Warren and a bus ride to Youngstown
One of the advantages of living in the Hospital area is its walkability. “You could walk downtown closer to there,” McGahagan says. “The high school is also north of Market Street, so students there could walk to school.” In the neighborhood, residents can take Western Reserve Transit Authority’s Warren-Express bus route to reach destinations in nearby Youngstown. Taking Routes 422 and 46, motorists can also get to the nearby city of Niles to visit the historic McKinley Memorial Library and Museum to learn more about the birthplace of 25th U.S. President William McKinley.
