An aerial of Hubbardston.
Out in the woods of Central Mass
Hubbardston is rural, forested and quiet, and people like it that way. This small village is where people move if they want two or three acres of land, with little traffic and basically no commercial activity. People live in the woods, drive to the pond to swim at the town beach and buy hay from the neighborhood beef farm. “It’s not an industrial community, nor is it a retail community,” says Keith McGuirk, a retired Realtor and chair of the Economic Development Industrial Corporation in nearby Athol. “It’s strictly rural.”

Winding roads in the New England wilderness
Some houses in Hubbardston sit along winding roads through the woods, where they’re made invisible by large trees unless they have a mailbox out front. Others sit near each other behind ample front lawns with wooden and white picket fences, evergreen trees and floral bushes. Split-level houses, two-story multifamily homes with bay windows, ranch-style houses and Cape Cods are typical, and neighbors maintain their homes with fresh trim and coats of paint. Home prices range between $248,000 and $1.2 million.

Riding and skiing at Mount Jefferson
People like Hubbardston because it’s determined to remain rustic and quiet. The community gathers at Curtis Recreation Field, which has a playground, soccer fields, basketball courts and a baseball diamond. Equestrians can house their horses at Robby Hill Stables, which offers training and lessons. People hike and ride their horses on dirt pathways at Mount Jefferson Conservation Area, a 317-acre woodland with hayfields and wetlands home to deer, moose and even bears. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also allowed. Neighbors hike and camp near the Barre Falls Dam, which includes a stone wall, an overlook and a disc golf course. The town has a public beach at Asnacomet Pond for swimming and sunbathing. Skiing and snowboarding happen at Wachusett Mountain, a regional ski resort near a lake and a nature reservation.

Hubbardston Pizza Palace serves pizza, calzones and buffalo chicken salad, and Hubb Town Diner has breakfast and lunch every day from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Food trucks, like hot sausage and fried dough purveyor Captain Ron’s Kitchen, park themselves in town. Specialty goods like granola and whoopie pies are available at Giacomo’s Gourmet Foods, and snacks are for purchase at Hubbardston Liquors & Food Market. Off the Commonwealth's beaten path
Hubbardston’s remote location is a selling point. It takes about 10 minutes to get to Route 2, a major east-west thoroughfare that runs east to Cambridge and west to the New York border. Gardner, which has chain restaurants and a movie theater, is about 8 miles north, and Worcester is 40 minutes away.
