Rustic, small-town living in Hubley
Hubley, 27 miles west of Pottsville, is a Schuylkill County township offering single-family homes with rural seclusion and early 20th-century charm. "It's an extreme country town," says Will Primeau, a Realtor at Ramus Realty Group with over 8 years of experience. "You drive down and look to the left — there's one mountain. You look to the right, and get another." Rolling hills, woodlands and quiet farmland surround the community. Residents generally shop in neighboring communities, like Valley View, for daily essentials.
Limited market of early 20th-century homes
Hubley's country roads are lined with mature trees and rolling landscapes. Some of the township's homes are tucked away with acreage, but homes along Main Street are set close together. These single-family homes are generally farmhouse or American Foursquare styles from the early 20th century, but there are mid-to-late 20th-century properties as well. Typical design features include sash windows, covered porches and wood siding. Homes rarely go on the market, but prices range from about $50,000 to $200,000, depending on size, features and renovation needs. "There are almost no detached homes available," Primeau says.
Dual-enrollment at Tri-Valley Junior/Senior High
Hubley is part of the Tri-Valley School District, which Niche rates C-minus overall. Kids may start at Hegins-Hubley Elementary before moving to Tri-Valley Junior/Senior High — both are rated C. At the latter, juniors and seniors may take dual-enrollment courses for credit at Lehigh Carbon Community College. In 2025, the boys' basketball team was the runner-up in the District XI Class 2A championship game.
Play, fish and explore in Schuylkill County
At the Mountainside Community Center, residents can hit the batting cages and play sports like basketball, volleyball and pickleball. The center also organizes sports tournaments and fitness groups throughout the year, like the Mountainside Senior Walking Club. "It's a very rural area," Primeau says. "There's hunting, fishing and lots of land." Anglers can cast lines in Pine Creek for rainbow trout and largemouth bass, while birders may spot red crossbills and rusty blackbirds. State Game Lands Number 264 borders Hubley, where hunters can find deer, turkey and squirrels. Eight miles away in Hegins, Hegins Park is a popular spot for a picnic or playground trip, and the Tri-Valley Community Pool is nearby with water aerobic classes. "You're also a valley over from all the four-wheel parks," Primeau says. Twelve miles away, the 3,000 Rausch Creek Off Road Park offers over 80 miles of rugged trails to explore. "Four-wheelers, jeeps — that's your big attraction there," Primeau says.
Small-town businesses in Valley View and Hegins
Aside from a few workshops and building suppliers, Hubley doesn't have much commercial activity. Fisher's Greenhouse has flowers and veggies, and Jackazz Distilling has a tasting room and gift shop, but residents run errands in neighboring communities.
Five miles away in Valley View, Redner's Warehouse Markets has pantry essentials and fresh produce, while Bixler's Country Meats has butcher cuts and smoked sausages. For a quick bite, there's Fortune Ocean with Chinese fare, and Prima Pizzeria Restaurant offers New York-style slices and finger foods, like creamy Cajun wings and sweet potato fries.
Bordering Valley View, Hegins offers more shopping and dining. Elsie's Restaurant is a no-frills diner with hot coffee and brunch favorites, like fluffy French toast and buttermilk chocolate chip pancakes. Across the street, All Stars Ice Cream Shop serves soft serve scoops, root beer floats and specialty sundaes, like the Hawaiian Delight — vanilla topped with marshmallows, pineapple, cherry, banana and whipped cream.
Gratz Fair
In September, the Gratz Fair is held 5 miles away in Gratz. Since 1873, the annual event has celebrated agriculture and community in Dauphin County. In addition to the usual live music, festival foods and carnival rides, there are typically acrobatic performances, petting zoos and a talent show. Fairgoers can compete in 4-H events, baking contests and antique tractor pulls.
Pennsylvania Route 25 and the nearest hospital and airport
Pennsylvania Route 25 (also called Main Street) passes through Hubley, providing a direct route to Pottsville. Residents drive to get around. Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street is 27 miles away, and Lehigh Valley International Airport is a 76-mile drive.
