One of Florida's best-kept secrets

With swaying palm trees, incredible sunset views and flourishing wildlife in its bayous, Hudson has all the components of a vacation destination, but instead operates as a small beach town with a lot of character. This quiet waterfront community is swimming in luxury, making it an ideal place to settle down. Hudson is growing quickly, and it is one of this region’s best-kept secrets. “As for the market, it’s hot but not exploding,” says Michael Bennett, Sr., a local Realtor with People’s Trust Realty. “Sometimes, a nice house will sit a while for no particular reason, so the prices are starting to come down.” In Hudson, houses are perched on the marinas of the Gulf Shores. Boat landings weave through the streets, encouraging fishing, boating and diving in the gulf and the surrounding lakes.

Hudson's waterfront homes

There are plenty of single-family homes in Hudson, including ranch-style homes, on the water, and Spanish Revivals further inland. Many homes have a garage and sit on a medium-sized lot in cul-de-sacs. Much of the residential construction took place in the 1980s, and most homes sell somewhere in the $200,000 – $480,000 range. For $275,000, homebuyers can find a 4-bedroom home on a half-acre lot with a fenced-in border and a carport, and prices increase to $475,000 for a 3-bedroom ranch-style home, sitting waterfront, with boat access and a covered patio.

Fresh seafood and top-tier ice cream

Hudson is no stranger to small businesses, with many mom-and-pop shops making up the local economy. For a seafood dinner with entertainment, Sam’s Beach Bar has live music, lobster rolls and fried calamari in a lively atmosphere for its guests. Get Hooked Grill is known for its fresh ingredients, including spear-caught fish, from the boats and to the kitchen. For dessert, residents visit the Hudson Beach Ice Cream Parlor, a family-owned business with unique flavors like graham crackers and salted caramel truffle.

Walmart, Winn-Dixie and Publix Super Market are all options for the kitchen essentials. For dinner, shoppers can walk the aisles of Whitney’s Fresh Market to find fresh seafood, like lobster, yellowfin tuna or blue crab.

Flourishing wildlife and tranquil salt marshes

Golfers can tee off at an attempt at a perfect drive at Beacon Woods Golf Club, which pairs picturesque views with the ocean breeze. Veterans Memorial Park is a staple in the community, with a splash pad, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, a baseball diamond and walking trails. The Hudson Grotto, a deep lake in the wilderness, provides the perfect place for swimming and scuba diving. If they reach a certain depth, divers may encounter ancient artifacts of a past American civilization.

Traveling south will land nature lovers in Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, where hiking trails, waterfalls and kayaking trips await in a tranquil salt marsh. To engage with wildlife, residents can go to the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary to enter the macaw sanctuary and feed the large, colorful parrots. Less than four miles north is SunWest Park, a 70-acre spring-fed lake with a beach, perfect for wakeboarding, swimming or spending a day in the sun.
