Small borough next to Pittston
Next to the city of Pittston, Hughestown is a small borough that features a mix of older homes and new developments. “It’s a quieter area on the outskirts of town,” says Casey Johnston, Realtor with RPA Real Estate who has worked in the Scranton area for eight years. The Hughestown Fire Department, primarily run by volunteers, is at the crux of the neighborhood and hosts food drives and community events, including the Good Friday Fish Fry. Students attend the Pittston Area School District, which receives a C-plus from Niche, and residents often travel into Pittston for food and fun, including the annual Tomato Festival.
Hughestown’s hilly streets lined with an array of homes
Many of the hilly streets in Hughestown are lined with long, narrow lots decorated with bushes and trees. Most lawns stretch to the pavement, although some roads toward the southern part of the neighborhood feature sidewalks. Locals live in a variety of homes from the early to mid-20th century, including brick and vinyl-sided ranch styles, split levels and bilevels. Farmhouses with covered porches and American Foursquares can also be found throughout the neighborhood. Many of these older properties offer what Johnston describes as “affordable house prices,” typically costing between $125,000 and $275,000.
Stauffer Pointe is a new condominium community in the neighborhood’s most southern part. Here, manicured lawns are maintained by condominium staff, and residents can expect a clubhouse and pool to open in the next few years. Homebuyers can select from two and three-bedroom ranch-style and two-story floorplans that typically cost between $275,000 and $400,000, with a monthly homeowners association fee of about $150.

Wendy’s and other fast-food restaurants are about 2 miles away, near the exit to Interstate 81. Residents get groceries at Redner’s Warehouse Market in Pittston Plaza or Aldi. They can find the rest of their essentials at Walmart, about 2 miles outside of town, and Lowe’s, about 10 miles away.

Locals attend Pittston and Hughestown events
Hughestown residents often participate in celebrations held in Pittston, known as the “Quality Tomato Capital of the World.” Every August, the city celebrates its name with the Tomato Festival, which draws in people from across the Scranton area. Attendees can compete in a 5k, watch the Little Miss and Mr. Tomato pageants, and vote for the best, most beautiful, and ugliest locally grown tomatoes. The borough also hosts community events, including the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and an Easter egg hunt. Many of these programs are put on by the Hughestown Lions Club, an organization dedicated to giving back to the community.
Pittston Area Schools foster emotional wellbeing
As part of the Pittston Area School District, students can start at Pittston Area Primary Center, which receives a B-minus from Niche and offers kindergarten and first grade. Second through fourth grade are taught at Pittston City Intermediate, which rates a C. Both schools work with the Carrie Flower Company to foster social and emotional well-being in young children through literature. Pittston Area Middle School scores a C-minus, and Pittston Area Senior High earns a B-minus.

Robert Yaple Memorial Park sits in the center of Hughestown, along the edge of a small forest. The baseball and soccer fields encourage people to get active while children can explore the colorful playground. For more outdoor options, residents can visit the several parks in Pittston, including Riverfront Park, about 2 miles away, along the Susquehanna. “People like to walk by the river,” Johnston says. Part of the Luzerne County Rail Trail, a 2-mile hiking path along the river, runs through the park. At the Pittston Memorial Library, about 1 mile away, patrons can check out a book or attend programs such as a crochet class or a movie night. Moosic Mountain is about 20 miles away and features a 12-mile trail that mountain bikers and hikers can explore.

Hughestown is largely car-dependent
Luzerne County Transportation Authority has stops along U.S. Route 11, although getting around Hughestown in a car is more manageable. U.S.-11 eventually merges with Interstate 476, also called the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which drivers can take into Philadelphia. This small borough is about 2 miles from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Railroad Station and about 3 miles from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.
Busy quarries bring train and truck traffic
Historically a mining region, there are numerous quarries and stone yards throughout the area for concrete and paving companies, including a large distribution yard behind Yaple Memorial Park. While these bring jobs, they also bring train and truck traffic through the neighborhood.
