Surrounded by the grassy hills and towering trees that rural western Pennsylvania is known for, the compact borough of Hunker offers a quiet residential setting for buyers seeking a small-town vibe without sacrificing an easy commute to the city.

Located about 35 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh, Hunker sits beside the slightly larger boroughs of New Stanton and Youngwood. Three-bedroom homes in Hunker generally list in the $150,000 to $200,000 range, and styles include everything from colorful Craftsman builds to petite row homes with covered front porches to country ranch-style homes. Updated farmhouses sit on larger lots farther from the borough’s center, while homes along Division Street tend to be closer together and feature narrow yards. Most streets do not have sidewalks, but a lack of through traffic means you can still enjoy a leisurely morning stroll over to the park.

Down the street from the post office and volunteer fire department, Hunker Borough Park serves as the borough’s meeting ground for local events throughout the year. While the playground, swings and jungle gyms are popular during the day, the park really comes to life during evening Halloween events held here each fall. In the summer, you can bring your blanket and relax while enjoying an outdoor movie screening. When you need to cool off, head up to the Youngwood Area Park & Pool for a refreshing dip and weekly swim lessons for the kids. And in August, mark your calendar for the annual Westmoreland Fair, an almost 70-year tradition that takes place 10 miles east at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds and features a demolition derby, animal showcases and local food.

As summer comes to a close, students can prepare to return to class at one of the local Hempfield Area School District locations, which all maintain grades of B on Niche. After attending Stanwood Elementary School and West Hempfield Middle School, students can move on to Hempfield Area Senior High School, which offers dual enrollment courses in connection with nearby community colleges.

After a busy school day, treat the kids to a fresh pie from Fox’s Pizza Den, the borough’s closest restaurant. For even more options, drive over to the neighboring borough of New Stanton to enjoy options such as Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and Pagano’s Italian Restaurant. From here, it’s an easy drive on Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway to reach the Shop ‘n Save, which is about 3 miles north in the Youngwood borough. And on your way home, stop for a homemade frozen treat from Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, an old-school counter-serve ice cream shop on Center Avenue.

With direct access to the Interstate 76 interchange, you’ll have a relatively easy commute to downtown Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh International Airport. Public transportation is available nearby in New Stanton, but the trip to downtown will take at least double the time it would by car. Still, the local buses are extremely convenient for reaching Youngwood’s shopping centers, and there’s even a Park and Ride station in New Stanton. If you’re looking for a charming small town to call home in western Pennsylvania, consider hunkering down in the Hunker borough.
