Rural Hunlock has farmland and proximity to Wilkes-Barre
Buyers can find secluded farmland properties in Hunlock, among the foothills of Wyoming Valley. Locals can enjoy boating and fishing along the Susquehanna River, which borders the rural township to the south. Most retail and dining options are in neighboring towns like Nanticoke and Plymouth. Hunlock is also a convenient landing spot for commuters around Northeastern Pennsylvania, as Wilkes-Barre is about twenty minutes away along U.S. Route 11, which cuts through town.
Movies at Garden Drive-In and kayaking on the Susquehanna River
Garden Drive-In is Hunlock’s main multipurpose gathering space. In the evenings, locals can park their cars on the lawn and watch family-friendly movies on two different screens. The Drive-In also connects to the Susquehanna Warrior Trail, which runs over 12 miles beside the churning river. There’s also the Hunlock Township Boat Launch, where locals can take kayaks out to explore the river. Nearby, Moon Lake State Forest Recreation Area blankets 942 acres of rolling woodland and meadows within the Pinchot State Forest, just south of Hunlock Creek. At its heart lies a 48-acre, spring-fed lake whose clear water draws anglers year-round; the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission stocks it with trout each spring, and ice-fishing is popular once the surface freezes.
Rural single-family homes and a farming land market
Home styles in Hunlock include ramblers, rural cottages and farmhouses sitting on spacious country lots. Prices range from $100,000 to $400,000, varying by square footage and lot size. There is also a significant land market in town for multi-acre parcels, either zoned for residential or agricultural use. “Prices, like everywhere, are rising,” says Hockman. “But it’s still fairly affordable within Luzerne County, so there’s good bang for your buck.” Locals have views of rolling mountains on their drive home, along the town’s winding country roads which cut through hills and creeks.
Locals head to Plymouth and Nanticoke to shop
The Garden Drive-In features a local flea market each Sunday where residents can browse craft vendors and farm-fresh goods. In the spring, the drive-in transforms into a vibrant Craft Fair each Saturday — an event that brings the community together regardless of April showers. “If you’re based around Hunlock, you’re probably heading over to Plymouth or Shickshinny for shopping and dining,” says Randy Hockman, a Realtor with RPA Real Estate with 28 years of experience serving northeastern Pennsylvania. “There’s more variety there than from home.” Stookey’s Famous Bar-B-Que, a restaurant along Route 11 in Plymouth, serves chili, ribs and pulled pork sandwiches. For groceries, there is a Weis Market seven miles south in Nanticoke, just a few blocks from Larry’s Pizzeria for wings and hot pies.
Northwest Area schools serve the township
Northwest Area School District covers the Hunlock area. Students can attend Northwest Area Primary School, Northwest Area Intermediate School, and Northwest Area High School, which all have C-plus ratings from Niche. Northwest High offers guidance programs to help students struggling with personal issues.
Simple commutes to Wilkes-Barre
Due to the rural nature of Hunlock, residents are car-dependent. Route 11 leads to Wilkes-Barre after a 13-mile drive east, taking around twenty minutes depending on traffic. The Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport is 24 miles away for domestic flights. The nearest hospital is Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, just 11 miles from home.
