Huntertown is one of the fastest-growing cities in Indiana

Located on the far northern side of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area, Huntertown is experiencing rapid growth. The city has doubled in size, going from about 4,800 residents in 2010 to just over 9,000 in 2020, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the region. “Huntertown has some of the most new construction in the area,” says Brad Noll, real estate agent and owner of Noll Team Real Estate. “There was the most amount of land available in the area, so a lot of developers came in and started building.” While not in Huntertown itself, the new and nearby Dupont Hospital has brought a lot of jobs to this side of Fort Wayne, encouraging more to move to the area.

Even with the new housing and opportunities in and around the city, Huntertown has plenty of established institutions that draw and keep people. “There’s an old Huntertown that has been around for a while, and there was someone on my team who bought a home in Huntertown specifically because of the coffeeshops and churches,” Noll says.

Huntertown's growing school district is still expanding

Huntertown is part of Northwest Allen County Schools, which earns an A from Niche and ranks as the state's 11th-best school district for athletes. “It’s a great community where people care about their schools, so it's attracting a lot of families,” Noll says. “I was just there Friday night for a sporting event, and they have a pretty good following.” Like the city, the district is also rapidly growing. The high school is currently under construction to add 27 new classrooms and other community spaces, which aim to be ready in December 2025. A new middle school is also under construction, expected to open In June 2026 and support about 1,000 students.

Getting around Huntertown and Fort Wayne by car

Huntertown lacks public transportation, making it a more car-dependent community. Lima Road links it with the rest of Fort Wayne, where many residents work, about 11 miles away. Dupont Hospital is just 7 miles south. When traveling, Fort Wayne International Airport is on the far south side of the city, about 19 miles away.

In the winter, Huntertown gets cold winters with the occasional snowstorm. “The snowfall doesn’t impact our lives too bad, but the thing that we do deal with is the ice,” Noll says. “The temperatures fluctuate a lot, and then there’s ice on the road.”

Huntertown's local cafes and restaurants and nearby supermarkets

Huntertown doesn’t have a distinct downtown or shopping district, so its restaurants tend to line Lima Road instead. Lima-Plant Mercantile, a local shopping center, has a collection of shops and eateries, including The Process. The local market offers some groceries, local produce and artisan goods. Right next door, Well Grounded Café serves warm drinks and breakfast sandwiches. Besides The Process, residents can pick up things at convenience stores around town but must head out of city limits for groceries. Lima Marketplace is just under 4 miles south along Lima Road and includes Aldi and a Walmart Supercenter.

Huntertown Heritage Days Festival and the Allen County Fair

In addition to being an essential green space for the city, Huntertown Family Park is where many annual events occur. In late July through early August, Huntertown Heritage Days Festival sets up shop in the park, offering live music at the park’s amphitheater, a parade, a corn hole tournament and a pageant. The Huntertown Community Park is the second Saturday of the month from May to September and showcases different vendors and food trucks. Huntertown also hosts the Allen County Fair at the fairgrounds on the city's southern side. For a week in June, people come out for the carnival rides, rodeo, hot air balloon flights and live music.
