Smalltown community outside Huntington
Buffalo Creek offers a sense of local community centered around two small public schools. Located 9 miles southwest of Huntington, it offers a handful of amenities, but most entertainment are in the nearby communities of Kenova or Huntington via Route 75. "People like having a community where you know a lot of your neighbors since we have two smaller schools right here," says Janie Smith, a Realtor with Booton Realty who also lives in the neighborhood.
Huntington-area homes with large lots
In recent decades, a wave of new construction has been spreading along Route 75, adding to Buffalo Creek's stock of midcentury suburban housing. "Homes here are selling pretty well,” Smith says “The lowest prices you'll find is $100,000, but can climb to $500,000. People are looking for more space and lots range from about a quarter acre to 5 acres." Ranch-styles, cottages and traditional homes were built between the 1950s and '70s. Set on larger lots with sloping lawns, newer builds offer larger floorplans and custom designs. Twelvepole Creek curves just beyond several homes, so FEMA may require varying levels of flood insurance. "The creek is nearby, but flooding generally isn't a concern," says Preston Cole, a local Realtor and co-owner of Property Professionals Inc. Buffalo Creek has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Conveniences and commutes through the Tri-State Area
Buffalo Creek's conveniences are limited to one Dollar General and Rocky Top's Pizza. A community staple, this locally owned pizza parlor serves freshly baked pies in addition to a menu of subs, sandwiches and cheesy breadsticks. For other services and shopping options like Kroger, residents can drive the 9 miles into Huntington in about 20 minutes on Route 75 and Haneys Branch Road. "Whether getting to work or just going out to a restaurant, almost everyone in this area drives," Smith says. Downtown's 14th Street is a hotspot for dining, with local produce and artisanal goods available at The Wild Ramp. West Tenampa Mexican Restaurant serves a creative menu of birria tacos, quesabirria and draft beers.
Cabell Huntington Hospital is located downtown on Hal Greer Boulevard, but military veterans can find medical assistance closer to home at the VA Hospital on Spring Valley Drive. For flights across the East Coast, Huntington Tri-State Airport is 4 miles west of Buffalo Creek and is serviced by American and Allegiant Airlines.
Buffalo Creek residents need to visit adjacent neighborhoods for most goods and services, as Dollar General is the largest store in town.
Gabby's 152 Tortilla Street, a nearby Mexican restaurant, is popular with Buffalo Creek residents.

Casting a line at Spring Valley Paylake
Spring Valley Paylake is a stocked fishing pond on Spring Valley Drive. A mile north, Camp Mad Anthony Wayne is the closest traditional park. It is used by local Boy Scout troops for camping and has a small network of hiking trails, a playground and an open campfire circle. "For other options like a larger playground, you would have to drive up to Ritter Park in the city," Smith says. Ritter Park is a destination for outdoor recreation, with courts for tennis and pickleball, an expansive playground and a rose garden that visitors can stroll through. In addition to more than 200 varieties of roses, the park features a water fountain and tall, shady trees that invite passersby to relax on a bench or spread out on the park's fields. When it gets cold out, the YMCA of Huntington is fully equipped with an indoor gym, swimming pool and track, as well as courts for racquetball and basketball.
