New development along W.V. Route 75
Shoals offers a range of residences and price points for those moving to the area. "It's a real mix out there, from rural properties to homes built in recent years,” says Preston Cole, a resident and Realtor who co-owns Property Professionals Inc. along with his wife, Debbie. “That whole stretch of 75 has a lot of new development, and lot sizes are bigger, too, so you could get anything from a half to three acres." Some of the oldest homes in Shoals were built in the 1950s, though a wealth of manufactured properties and large, traditional homes can be found from more recent decades. Ranch-style houses and contemporary homes are the predominant styles. Most newly developed properties in the area boast brick facades and large lots surrounded by wooded areas. There are also a few sections of manufactured homes, including the Birchwood Mobile Home Park. Manufactured homes and some older properties range from $50,000 to $150,000, while larger, contemporary homes can go for $300,000 to $600,000. Shoals has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

Spring Lake High School offers dual enrollment through Marshall University
Shoals' students are part of Wayne County Schools, which scores a C-plus on Niche and has around 6,000 students. Children may attend Buffalo Elementary School and Buffalo Middle School, both earning a B-plus from Niche. Spring Valley High School scores a C on Niche. The high school offers the Herd Academy, which is a dual enrollment program partnering with Marshall University in nearby Huntington.

Beech Fork Lake is within 10 miles
With West Virginia's rolling hills and Twelvepole Creek curving just beyond most residents' homes, the outdoors is easily accessible in Shoals. "Certain areas of the creek do have flooding, but for the most part, it's not too bad," Cole says. Two 18-hole golf courses can be found 3 miles east in Lavalette. Creekside Golf Course recently rebuilt its clubhouse to include a restaurant and covered deck area for members to socialize. Sugarwood Golf Club is open to the public, features a fully stocked pro shop and is regularly ranked among the best public golf courses in West Virginia. The YMCA of Huntington is an indoor recreation option that offers fitness classes, an indoor pool, a racquetball court and a track.
Beech Fork Lake is less than 10 miles away and offers fishing and boating. The lake is part of the larger Beech Fork State Park that spans more than 3,000 acres. The park includes more than 30 miles of shoreline, a network of trails and multiple campsites.

Lavalette has a Food Fair and locally owned restaurants
Neighboring Lavalette is about 3 miles away and offers numerous shops and restaurants. Quick errands can be run at Dollar General, while Food Fair is the closest grocery option. Numerous fast-food options like McDonalds and Taco Bell are nearby, but there are some locally owned spots. Gabby's 152 Tortilla Street serves Mexican cuisine in a colorful indoor space and a large outdoor patio. Tudor’s Biscuit World is a local chain known for its freshly made biscuits.

Tri-State Airport offers regional flights
As part of the Tri-State Area, residents of Shoals can drive to Ohio, Kentucky or West Virginia in a matter of minutes. "People often pass through different states on their way to work, that's why we call it the Tri-State Area," Maynard says. Huntington, West Virginia, is about 8 miles, or 15 minutes, north along Route 152, while Ashland, Kentucky, is 20 miles west on Route 75. Huntington Tri-State Airport is just over 7 miles west on Route 75, with flights from Allegiant and American Airlines. The closest hospital, Cabell Huntington Hospital, is on 5th Street in Huntington. Veterans can also use their benefits at the VA Hospital located 8 miles west in Spring Valley.
