In Southside Huntington, the predominately brick residential streets are home to towering oak trees, large homes and walkable dining spots. Whitney Hood-Gesner, a local Realtor with Hood Realty Company, says, "It's a pretty popular place for people to live: very walkable, very convenient to downtown, very convenient to Marshall University. But it has larger homes and is more family-oriented.”

Plenty of space to settle down
A collection of early to midcentury houses with relatively sizable yards fill Southside’s streets, some still paved with century-old bricks. Made up of mostly Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles, houses average more than 2,000 square feet, larger than surrounding Huntington neighborhoods. Lots are larger, too, often greater than a quarter acre. Most of the streets have sidewalks, contributing to the neighborhood's walkability. Properties that need structural work or upgrades sell for $20,000 to $70,000, while those that are move-in ready go for between $80,000 and $400,000 based in part on the square footage.

Places like Cam’s Ham and Gino’s can satisfy locals’ appetites
While the area is mostly residential, dining and shopping are close by. Cam’s Ham on First Street opened in the 1950s, and Food Network featured its sugar-flaked ham sandwich on a list highlighting 50 of the best sandwiches around the country. West Virginia-based chain Gino’s Pizza & Spaghetti House is also in the neighborhood. Grindstone Coffeeology serves brunch all day and is a spot to grab a coffee or latte on the fly. There’s a Kroger just north of Cam’s Ham on First Street.

Community programming is right around the corner
Huntington’s Ritter Park to the south hosts seasonal events. The calendar includes Funktafest, an Egyptian music and arts festival in mid-October, and Boo Bash, a Halloween party complete with a costume parade and a screening of “Mickey's Monster Musical.” Other events in the city include 9th Street Live, a series of outdoor concerts held downtown on Fridays from May to August, and the Central City Market, a farmers market held just west of Southside on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from June to October.
Families get involved at Southside Elementary
Kids in the neighborhood can enter the Cabell County Schools system, which receives a B grade on Niche. The B-rated Southside Elementary has an active parent-teacher organization, promoting events like an annual Halloween costume party. Huntington Middle, which gets a B-minus grade, offers a range of sports teams, from football to golf. Huntington High, a B-rated school, has a diverse selection of elective classes, including economics and creative writing courses. Southside residents are also just about 2 miles from Marshall, West Virginia’s second-largest university with more than 11,000 total students.
Ritter Park is well-respected
Ritter Park is more than a space for events, it’s one of the draws to this neighborhood. “Ritter Park, it’s a much smaller version, but it’s our equivalent of Central Park in New York City,” Hood-Gesner says. Ritter’s 75 acres are filled with features like a photogenic fountain and a rose garden, plus paths for walking, a dog park and a playground. Southside is also home to a YMCA with a 6,370 square-foot fitness center and a 3,237 square-foot group fitness studio.
