Westmoreland preserves 20th-century homes and streetcar landmarks
While Huntington modernizes, Westmoreland has stayed in a preservationist bubble, partly because it's in a different county from the rest of the city. For over 100 years, it's been home to industrial workers and local business owners. Today, Westmoreland is more residential than it once was, but not much else has changed. The community has kept its characteristic Old World feeling, with preserved 20th-century homes and landmarks like Camden Park, one of America's oldest continuously operating trolley parks (aka amusement park). "You've got a Huntington address, but you're in Wayne County, so it's kind of on the cusp there. And the thing about Westmoreland is you can be in Kentucky, Ohio or you can be in Huntington, West Virginia, in minutes," says Realtor Vineta Maynard of Realty Exchange. "There's more of a family community, and you're not far from some nice restaurants and shopping."
Craftsman cottages and midcentury ranch-styles on brick streets
Westmoreland's 20th-century charm is largely preserved in its brick streets and assortment of architectural styles common in former streetcar suburbs. Craftsman cottages, American Foursquares and Colonial Revival homes often sell for $100,000 to $175,000. In the second half of the century, as Westmoreland grew, midcentury architecture became the new craze, leading to a sizable collection of ranch-style homes now selling for $125,000 to $200,000. Westmoreland hasn't seen very many new builds while the community maintains its architectural heritage; more common is investors renovating a preexisting home.

Historic roller coasters and community playgrounds
A former streetcar suburb, Westmoreland is still home to historic Camden Park, a trolley park built at the end of a streetcar line to increase ridership on weekends. Open since 1903, the park still operates seasonally. Visitors come from all over to ride the Big Dipper, a wooden roller coaster built in 1958, or the Whip, a teacups ride designed by William F. Mangels of Coney Island fame. Nearby, Westmoreland Park's shaded playground pairs with basketball and pickleball courts, and the milelong Floodwall Trail is a popular spot for walks along the river. The neighborhood sees quite a few in- and above-ground swimming pools as well.

Easy commutes across the Tri-State Area
With Westmoreland's location near the convergence point of the Tri-State area, residents can easily commute throughout the region. "If you're somebody who maybe works at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, or maybe works at the steel mill in Huntington, Westmoreland would be a good location because you don't have a huge commute between the two," Maynard says. Some parts of Westmoreland are more walkable than others, as some residential streets lack a sidewalk.
Women's clubs and church exercise groups
Westmoreland residents stay connected through numerous civic clubs and churches. The Westmoreland Senior Citizens Center provides meals and assistive services to the community's golden agers. The Westmoreland Women's Club holds regular rummage sales in addition to charity dinners and food drives to raise funds for local scholarships. The neighborhood is also home to dozens of churches, each providing regular services and special events such as community dinners and group exercise classes with Westmoreland United Methodist Church.
Famous fried chicken from Camden Corner
Businesses like landscapers, laundromats, daycares and auto repair shops are scattered throughout the neighborhood. A handful of restaurants and retail stores can also be found throughout the area, mostly chains like Family Dollar and Giovanni's Pizza. A few street corners host local businesses, including small bars like the Highway Inn. Camden Corner is arguably the most popular eatery in Westmoreland, known for its crispy fried chicken and jelly donuts. Additional businesses and supermarkets in West Huntington are a 5-minute drive.

Reversing a history of floods
Following the devastating Ohio River Flood of 1937, a levee and pump station were constructed along the Westmoreland riverfront, curtailing the neighborhood's risk for flooding. Most of the neighborhood is no longer in a flood zone, although some spots around Krout Creek still have a mild risk.
