Once the fox-hunting and equestrian retreat of wealthy St. Louisans in the early 1900s, the Missouri enclave of Huntleigh remains a coveted respite from suburbia with grand houses, forested acreage and few, but quiet, streets.
With about 400 full-time residents, who average an annual income of $250,000, the neighborhood west of downtown also features something you can’t see – made easier by a population that could very nearly travel to Europe together in a single jumbo jet.
“There’s a sense of camaraderie here,” says John Ryan, a Coldwell Banker real estate agent who has lived in Huntleigh for 35 years. “Neighbors host holiday parties, and you can get to know everyone since it’s such a small town.”

Expansive estates
Nine named roads wind through the trees, leading to multi-acre properties with long driveways and immaculate landscaping. Some of the largest estates in the county are found in Huntleigh. These multi-million-dollar houses vary in style; but most have at least 5,000 square feet of interior space. Some estates include swimming pools, tennis courts, guest houses or private equestrian facilities.
Because the neighborhood is so small, houses don’t go on the market often. Home prices sit firmly in the millions, and undeveloped two-to-three-acre lots sell for just below $2 million. A few ranch-style homes in Huntleigh offer 3,000 square feet and are priced at $1 million, but most Huntleigh houses are neo-eclectic estates priced between $2 million and $5 million.
Luxury homes aside, one of the most alluring aspects of this neighborhood is its combination of lifestyle and location. According to Rex Schwerdt, a Realtor with Gladys Manion, Inc., Huntleigh’s residents feel like they’re in the country but enjoy proximity to groceries, shopping and dining.

Plaza Frontenac
Huntleigh is, rather proudly, a neighborhood with a purely residential focus. While commercial and retail areas are kept outside the town’s borders, that doesn’t mean that life here is inconvenient. Two miles north up South Lindbergh Boulevard is Plaza Frontenac, the region's premier high-end shopping destination, with plenty of restaurants, luxury boutiques and department stores. “The county library is just over the border in Ladue, and there are great restaurants at Plaza Frontenac,” says Ryan. “Even though Huntleigh is entirely residential, there’s plenty to do nearby.”
Just across the street from the Plaza, Schnucks, a family-owned St. Louis supermarket chain, is the preferred spot for grocery hauls.

Quick trip to the St. Louis Zoo
Though the neighborhood has no parks, there’s plenty of space to explore the great outdoors in the open spaces between expansive properties. For a change of scenery, St. Louis’ most popular park, Forest Park, is less than 10 miles away from Huntleigh. Forest Park offers walking trails through both beautifully planned landscaping and restored natural habitats. In addition to its natural features, it’s home to the St. Louis Zoo, the Art Museum and the Science Center, which host regular public events throughout the year.
