Mountaintop luxury homes and valley suburbs
Green Mountain offers a variety of housing options, including subdivisions and multi-family communities in the valley and luxury communities on the mountain. It's an increasingly desirable area for Huntsville buyers seeking to live outside the city. In the valley, clusters of homes were built between the mid-20th century and early 21st century, including ranch-style, New Traditional, split levels and townhouses. Homes here are usually priced between $300,000 and $525,000. The mountain has more recent construction, featuring millennial mansions, modern farmhouses and large New Traditional homes. Prices start between $700,000 and $900,000 and peak at around $1 million or $2 million. Lots for custom builds are quickly becoming a popular option, usually priced between $125,000 and $150,000 for a slice of mountain. "Everyone who builds on the mountain becomes a member of the Lodge, which has a gym, pool, tennis courts and a community area," says Dollarhide.

Huntsville City Schools offers technical training for high school students
Huntsville City Schools serves Green Mountain residents, and where students attend elementary or middle school depends on their location. They may start at either Mountain Gap Elementary or Challenger Elementary, both of which earn an overall B rating from Niche. They may then go to A-minus-rated Mountain Gap Middle or B-plus-rated Challenger Middle. Virgil Grissom High serves all students in the area and earns an A-minus rating. The school offers career and technical education programs in areas such as marketing, engineering, and cybersecurity.

Green Mountain's rivers, mountains and trails
Most residents aren't just close to nature; they're immersed in it. Hiking paths meander across the pine and oak forests that give the mountain its name. The Madison County Nature Trail encircles a lake with picnic areas, a fishing pier and a kayak launch. Blevins Gap is another hiking area, with trails leading to a scenic overlook of Huntsville. Nearby, the Tennessee River Greenway has a walking and biking path along the river, with a fishing pier and boat launch area. McGucken Park offers a place for residents to gather. There are athletic fields, facilities for Little League games and a large playground for the community's kiddos.

Close to local dining and retail hubs
Even though most of Green Mountain has a rural feel, the community is near two major commercial hubs. A big box retail area on Bailey Cove Road Southeast has options like Target, Kohl's and PetSmart. This area also has a movie theater and several local and national chain restaurants, like Amerigo Italian Restaurant and breakfast joint Biscuit Belly. Highway 231 has more options a few miles north, including Walmart, Sam's Club and Whole Foods. Restaurants include fast food chains and local favorites like soul food buffet Kacey's Home Cooking and classic Mexican restaurant El Vaquero. Farther north on Highway 231, downtown Huntsville offers bars, restaurants, museums and entertainment venues like the Von Braun Center.

Getting around Green Mountain and South Huntsville
Part of South Huntsville, residents can connect to the rest of the city through major thoroughfares like Bailey Cove Road Southeast, Southeast South Shawdee Road and Highway 231. The community is car-dependent, but the commute is only 10 miles or less. Residents who commute to major employers like Redstone Arsenal are less than 15 miles away. Huntsville International Airport is only 25 miles from Green Mountain. The nearest hospital, Crestwood Medical Center, is 8 miles away. Green Mountain has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, three points lower than the national number.
