A forward-thinking community shared between Huntsville and Madison

A community where many amenities are within walking distance and city life is close -- that's the Edgewater neighborhood, split between Huntsville and Madison. A community with three main divisions, including the New Urbanist-style Town Madison area, Edgewater offers modern homes and a distinct experience. Lakes, golf centers and restaurants with character are all here – as is a quirky minor league baseball team. When people want a slice of city living, downtown Huntsville is a short drive away via I-565, which acts as the neighborhood’s northern border. “The area is known for its great amenities and how close it is to everything,” says Katie Williams, a realtor with Capstone Realty.

Colonial Revival, ranch-style and contemporary homes

The area has three main communities within it. Edgewater on Lady Ann Lake is built around the 140-acre namesake lake, which residents can use for fishing, boating and birdwatching. Architecture styles in the community vary, but Colonial Revival, ranch-style and contemporary homes are prevalent, as are one- and two-floor townhomes. Homes typically range from $300,000 to $715,000, with homes closer to the lake being more expensive. In the northern section of the neighborhood is Town Madison, a community designed by architect Andres Duany that emphasizes the importance of walkable streets and accessible public spaces. Town Madison homes, primarily New Traditional, usually range from $350,000 to $915,000. The south portion of the area is The Reserve, where Craftsman homes and townhomes are common. These homes usually range from $300,000 to $725,000. Redstone Arsenal, a United States Army base home to the Marshall Space Flight Center and other government agencies, sits approximately 6 miles east of the neighborhood. Occasional blasts from the U.S. Army Redstone Test Center and other sites on the base can be heard.

The Madison Golf Center has a driving range with 12 target greens and offers private lessons. Dublin Park has 60 acres of sports facilities, including a disc golf course and indoor and outdoor pools. Monte Sano State Park’s 2,140 acres of green space are only a 15-mile drive away. The park has 20 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails, all of which are typically covered in colorful azaleas come spring. Funbox, a jumbo-sized bounce house with a kids-first mindset, has 25,000 square feet of “jumping zones” connecting 10 different play areas.

Watch the Rocket City Trash Pandas take their cuts

In the heart of Town Madison is Toyota Field, the home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas Minor League Baseball team, the AA-level affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The team, named for both the space industry’s presence in Madison and the prevalence of raccoons in the area, holds 69 games a year at Toyota Field. The stadium also hosts events like a family breakfast with Santa Claus and various concerts.

A short drive from Huntsville International Airport

As the neighborhood is designed to be walkable, getting to local cafes and shops on foot is always an option. The community is just south of I-565 and 10 miles from downtown Huntsville. Madison Hospital is 8.5 miles away. Huntsville International Airport is 5 miles west.

Prohibition Rooftop Bar & Grill has unobstructed views

Nearby Publix Super Market and Walmart Supercenter give residents grocery shopping options. Prohibition Rooftop Bar & Grill serves barbecue and international dishes while customers on its rooftop get a view of the neighborhood. SaZa Serious Italian is run by chef Joe DiMaggio Jr. — a cousin of the baseball legend — and features a slew of authentic dishes, about 80% of which were created by DiMaggio Jr.’s grandmother, according to the restaurant. Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken invites customers to play “Jaws” and “The Goonies” pinball machines while surrounded by wall-hung beer signs, license plates and dollar bills. Parkway Place, 11 miles east, is an indoor mall with stores like Forever 21, Finish Line, Reeds Jewelers and Belk.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
