About Indian Head, MD

About Indian Head, MD

A quiet community with a small-town charm

With a "Back to the Future" sort of quality about it, Indian Head is a place where someone like Marty McFly might fit right in. “If you were taken back to a town in the 60s, it would be just like one of those towns,” says Tina Marie Biggs, a veteran Realtor with eXp Realty, who sells homes in and around here. “It’s quiet with an old-time charm. The community itself has so much to offer with the bike trails, the walking trails and the proximity to the Potomac River.” The tradeoff for a peaceful home environment is drive time for the many residents who commute from here to Washington, D.C. “To get to D.C. from there is about 30 to 40 minutes, which is an average commute, but the Highway 210 corridor is an acquired taste. If you’re trying to get home fast, it just doesn’t happen," Biggs says.

Moving into Indian Head

When you get home, prepare to find vintage houses that have been updated. See midcentury ranch-style homes and split levels. “That was the thing back then,” Biggs says. The median price for a single-family home in Indian Head is around $350,000. Townhouse prices are just about the same. Prices range from as low as $100,000 to the upper $600,000s, up to $1 million.

Learning with Charles County Public Schools

Students attend Indian Head Elementary, which Niche rates C, General Smallwood Middle School, which Niche rates C-plus and Henry E. Lackey High School, which Niche rates B-minus and whose teachers it ranks in the top 40% of high school teachers across the state. The schools are in Charles County Public Schools, which Niche rates B.

Smallwood State Park has views of the Potomac River

With so much water near and around Indian Head, it's not surprising that the water plays a major role in its parks system. The community’s most substantial park is Smallwood State Park on the Potomac River. Smallwood is known for its nature center, camping and picnic areas and fishing. “The Bass Master Classic comes through there,” says Biggs, an avid fishing fan.

Leaving the community for most retail

If having shopping right at your fingertips matters to you, then Indian Head might not suit you. “The closest thing to shopping that they have in Indian Head is a Dollar General and a few sporadic food places,” Biggs says. “But it’s very convenient for the people in Indian Head to get to shopping because it’s only 15 minutes away.” For grocery as well as retail shopping, prepare to head into neighboring Waldorf or LaPlata. Waldorf has Giant and Safeway supermarkets to handle your grocery needs, plus major retail shopping at The Shops at Waldorf Center, where you’ll find so many of the big brands. In LaPlata, you’ll find shopping as well as dining. “One of my favorites in LaPlata is Galazio. It serves Mediterranean food. My husband appreciates the tomahawk steak that’s served there. It’s pretty good stuff,” Biggs says.

Attractions and getting around Indian Head

This is home to U.S. Naval Support Facility Indian Head, which plays a vital role in military readiness. Beyond that, with just 1.2 square miles of total land area, don’t expect Indian Head to be a hub of activity and social events. It is, however, home to the Indian Head Center for the Arts, which performs at a cozy venue called Black Box Theater. See cabarets, solo acts, comedies and full-length musicals there. If you invite guests, tell them to allow extra time for travel. If Highway 210 is backed up, they almost surely can expect delays. “As 210 goes, so does commuting. Because Indian Head is the end of the highway’s line,” Biggs says.
