Hideaway in a cozy log cabin surrounded by protected forests in the quiet countryside neighborhood of Springfield, just 60 miles from Pittsburgh. While this quaint community is largely rural, access to luxury amenities is just a short drive away. Marcia Speicher, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway, recently had clients who bought a home in Springfield. "He wanted to be close to a golf course, and she wanted a log cabin in the middle of the country where she could forget the world," says Speicher, who’s been selling homes in the area for more than 14 years.

Homes are hard to come by here, but when they come up for sale, they are often on plots of land over an acre. Snag a three-bedroom colonial or a ranch-style fixer-upper starting below $100,000, or find a renovated three- to four-bedroom log cabin for up to $420,000.

Neighborhood kids may attend schools within the Connellsville Area School District. Elementary-aged students may attend Springfield Clifford N Pritts Elementary School, which received a C on Niche. From there, kids can continue their education at Connellsville Area Middle School, rated a C-minus on Niche. High schoolers can finish their primary school education at Connellsville Area Senior High School, which boasts a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio. The high school received a C-plus on Niche.

Surrounded by small mountains and dense forests, this rural community offers abundant hiking and fly-fishing opportunities. Trek the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail at Laurel Ridge State Park near the edge of town or cast a line in the centrally located Mill Run Reservoir. "This is the playground for people who come from the city of Pittsburgh," Speicher says. Springfield is also located near several resorts. Hole up in a yurt or play a round of paintball at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts, a family-centric resort in the unincorporated Springfield community of Mill Run. Just 10 miles from town, hit the slopes and lounge in luxury at the world-class Seven Springs Mountain Resort. For warm weather fun, head to the famous Laurel Valley Golf Club, just 23 miles northeast of Springfield. The golf club was first designed in 1959 by renowned golf course architect Dick Wilson and later renovated by golf great Arnold Palmer.

Pick up your weekly groceries at May's Country Store, a small, locally-owned grocery store in central Normalville, another unincorporated community within Springfield. Just across town, order a specialty cut of beef at May's Custom Meat Processing, the neighborhood butcher shop owned and operated by the same family. For other daily necessities, stop by Dollar General or head out of town to Crossroads Plaza shopping mall, just 16 miles away. Grab a buttery pierogi pizza at Normalville's Paint Room Pizzeria & Sandwich Shop, or indulge in a classic American cheeseburger at See-Mor's All Star Grill.

While this rural community may offer a quiet hideaway, a drive down Pennsylvania State Route 711 to nearby Interstate 76 will take you to the bustling city. Hop on Pennsylvania State Route 381 to head south or follow Pennsylvania State Route 653 east. If you're leaving the country, head to the Pittsburgh International Airport, 75 miles away.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
