Canterbury-Chatard
Home styles reflect Canterbury-Chatard's postwar boom
Canterbury-Chatard didn’t begin growing until the years immediately following World War II, and for good reason. Much of the land here was formerly a peat bog called Bacon’s Swamp that was nicknamed the “Indianapolis Everglades.” Today a pair of ponds provide the only clues to the landscape before it was dredged and filled in. Houses are predominantly in the styles popular in the 1940s and ‘50s: ranches, bungalows and Cape Cods. Prices range from $150,000-$589,000 in the neighborhood.54th Street corridor rich in dining options
Though Broad Ripple’s shopping and dining scene is nearby, Canterbury-Chatard residents still have plentiful options in their own neighborhood. "There are many great restaurants on 54th Street,” Elson says. Mama Corolla’s and Good Morning Mama’s are neighoboring restaurants that typify the Canterbury-Chatard dining scene. Mama Corolla’s serves Italian cuisine in a converted 1920s stucco house, while Good Morning Mama’s turned a former service station into a brightly colored diner with 1950s vibes. Nearby, Nicole-Taylor's Pasta+Market+Backroom holds reservation-only dinners on the first Friday of each month, though its house-made pastas and sauces can also be taken to go. Near 54th and Keystone Ave, Mississippi Belle is an Indy soul-food staple. The Pawn Shop Pub – so named because the original owner wanted his wife to believe he was opening a pawn shop rather than a bar – was voted Indy’s best pub in 2023 by FOX 59 viewers. The Pawn Shop is known for its pork tenderloin sandwiches and weekly cornhole league. A Meijer at 54th and Keystone also means residents can grocery shop without leaving the neighborhood.Canterbury Neighborhood Association sponsors events
Canterbury applies to the westernmost part of the neighborhood, and the Canterbury Neighborhood Association organizes events at Canterbury Park. These include a Kids' Bike Parade the weekend before the Indianapolis 500 and a Food Truck and Live Music Night on summer Thursdays. The association also organizes a bi-annual neighborhood garage sale.Bishop Chatard High gives neighborhood its identity
The Chatard in Canterbury-Chatard references Bishop Chatard High School, which opened in the neighborhood’s northeast corner in 1961. Bishop Chatard receives an A-grade on Niche. The Trojans are among the powerhouses of Indiana high school football with a whopping 17 state championships, and multiple former players have reached the NFL. Adjoining Christ the King Catholic K-8 school is not rated on Niche. Public school students would attend IPS | Butler Lab School 55, a K-8 school with a C-rating on Niche. Students may also qualify to attend Merle Sidener Gifted Academy School No. 359, which serves second through eighth grades. Purdue Polytechnic High School North – located at the former Broad Ripple High – is a charter school serving the neighborhood. It receives a B-rating. Canterbury-Chatard students may also attend B-rated Shortridge High.Canterbury Park provides Monon Trail access
Canterbury Park’s three acres include a picnic area, playground, and sand volleyball court. The park is also adjacent to the Monon Trail, though anyone looking to park their car before a long bike ride will have to do so on the street – there's no parking lot. The Broad Ripple Haverford Little League’s diamonds are also in the neighborhood.Monon Trail contributes to bike-friendly feel
Canterbury-Chatard is more tucked away from Indy’s wide-reaching interstate access than many of the city’s neighborhoods, providing a sense of calm save for busy Keystone Ave. and College Ave. The Monon Trail and 54th St. both contribute to the neighborhood’s high bike- and pedestrian-friendly scores. Residents can catch the IndyGo 19 bus on 52nd St for public transit.Flood risk mostly limited to open spaces
Humans reclaimed this land from its boggy post-Ice Age origins, put parts of the neighborhood remain prone to floods. Fortunately, the most at-risk areas are open space – the twin ponds still referred to as Bacon Swamp, and Canterbury Park.
