Historic Chatham Arch has easy walks to Mass Ave and Bottleworks

If you ask a Hoosier where to spend a night on the town in Indianapolis, they’ll probably point you to Massachusetts Avenue and the Bottleworks District, two hot spots packed with restaurants, bars and shops. Both of these heavy hitters call Chatham Arch home, a cozy neighborhood that blends historic charm with urban living. You’re steps from some of the best nightlife, entertainment and eateries in Indy, but it’s also easy to bike or use public transportation. With diverse housing options, strong walkability and a lengthy history, Chatham Arch is in the middle of all the action in downtown Indy.

Why Bottleworks and Mass Ave are top spots for food and fun

The Bottleworks District has brought extra verve to Indy with amenities like the Art Deco-style Bottleworks Hotel, The Garage Food Hall and Pins Mechanical Co., which has duck pin bowling and dozens of pinball machines. Revelers can walk and shop around the district with a cocktail in hand. Massachusetts Avenue — or just Mass Ave to locals — is a hub for nightlife and entertainment. "My son goes every night to the Mass Ave area," says Aubrey Walters, a real estate broker with EXP Realty and host with ADTV. "That's where a lot of people go to socialize." There’s tons spots to grab a bite or a drink, including:

  • Love Handle, which has a rotating menu of breakfast and brunch favorites
  • Chatham Tap, a British pub and gathering place for Premier League soccer fans
  • Livery, which specializes in Latin American fare and features a rooftop patio
  • BODHI, an upscale Thai bistro with craft cocktails
  • Condado Tacos, which serves up tacos in a mural-covered building

Diverse housing from historic Victorians to modern condos

Chatham Arch was a melting pot for post-Civil War residents. The neighborhood drew folks from all walks of life, from railroad workers to the city’s upper class, and the community’s architecture reflects that. Modest worker cottages and shotgun houses share sidewalks with stately Italianate homes and newer builds from the late 1990s and early 2000s. “It has quite a few of the older Victorian homes, but then it also has a good mix of new builds and it even has some condos,” says Jess Martin, an Indianapolis resident and co-founder and broker at Maywright Property Co. “It has a really diverse set of housing, which I love, because I’ve helped clients move from a two-bedroom condo to one of those big two-story Victorians a few blocks away because they have kids, or I have retirees who want to downsize to condos.”

Yard space is often limited, but mature trees add greenery to the neighborhood. Many properties have detached garages in the back, and some have carriage houses that have been repurposed into garages or apartments. Street parking is tight, but residents can apply for parking permits through the city. Some of the larger historic homes and former commercial buildings have been transformed into condominiums, such as the Real Silk Lofts in the former Real Silk Hosiery Mills factory. Because the area is a designated historic district, any exterior changes have to be approved by the city’s historic preservation commission.
