Mid-century homes tied to an industrial past -- and future
Dealt a major blow when its largest employer shut down in 2008, Indianapolis' East Gate neighborhood is on the rebound thanks to its affordable array of mid-century homes located in an area bordering a pair of interstates. Most neighborhood homes were built in the 1950s and ‘60s, taking advantage of their proximity to Ford’s steering assembly plant in the neighborhood. That plant is now a distant memory, finally being replaced by an industrial park set to open in 2025. “When Ford was there, it was a booming area,” says real estate broker Karen Lyons of BluPrint Real Estate Group. “When that went away, there was definitely a downturn. But it's slowly turning back. People are investing more on the Eastside and trying to get businesses to invest, too.”

East Gate utilizes the IndyGo bus for public transportation.
Easy highway access a neighborhood trademark
Transportation access shaped East Gate’s industrial past and future. A pair of major Indianapolis streets – Washington Street and Shadeland Avenue – intersect here. Interstates 70 and 465 form the northern and eastern boundaries, and U.S. Route 52 is the southern boundary. “The walkability might not be there, but it’s a short drive to Irvington or even to downtown,” Lyons says. Walkers and bicyclists can access the Pennsy Trail, which starts in neighboring Irvington and stretches east to suburban Hancock County. IndyGo bus routes serve East Gate along 10th St., Washington St. and Shortridge Ave.
There's more than car dealerships in East Gate
Residents of other Indianapolis neighborhoods likely recognize East Gate from its row of more than a half-dozen car dealerships along Shadeland Ave. And a row of hotels near I-70 means plenty of out-of-towners have slept in the neighborhood. But many East Gate businesses have locals in mind. Manley’s Irish Mutt has served pub grub favorites like fish and chips and the Hoosier tenderloin sandwich for more than a decade. Kasai Sushi Bar and Kitchen, tucked in an unassuming parking lot near a muffler shop, is another local favorite. Four Seasons Diner, open daily from 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m., is another East Gate staple. There is a Kroger in the neighborhood for groceries and a nearby Aldi in Irvington.

The nearest outdoor getaways are in Irvington. Ellenberger Park has an indoor skating rink and seasonal outdoor swimming pool among the amenities over its 42 acres. A few blocks away, the public 18-hole Pleasant Run Golf Course has been here since the days of wooden-shafted clubs, opening in 1922. Within East Gate, members can take advantage of recreational offerings at the Harper J. Ransburg YMCA branch. The Indianapolis Pickleball Club, an 10-court indoor facility opened in March 2024, is the neighborhood’s newest recreational option.

Mid-century houses reflect their original intent
Homes in the neighborhood reflect their original buyers – members of the working middle class who would have been employed at Ford or other local plants. “A lot of people looking here like the urban lifestyle and being close to Irvington, and traditional mid-century modern type of houses,” Lyons says. Ranches, split-levels and some Cape Cods range between $90,000-347,000 in East Gate. The median price of an East Gate home is about $40,000 less than in neighboring Irvington and $70,000 less than neighboring Raymond Park.

Warren Township schools serve neighborhood
Warren Township schools serve East Gate. Most students attend Pleasant Run Elementary before moving to Stonybrook Middle School. Both schools receive C ratings on Niche. Students in the southern part of the neighborhood would be zoned to attend C-plus rated Hawthorne Elementary and C-rated Raymond Park Middle School. Both middle schools feed B-rated Warren Central High. Holy Spirit Catholic School, which serves K-8 students, is the lone school located inside the neighborhood.

East Gate is home to the exciting Indianapolis Speedrome.
Indianapolis Speedrome provides a unique racing experience
Located along Kitley Ave. near the neighborhood's southwest corner, the Indianapolis Speedrome has entertained East Gate residents for decades. This is the birthplace of Figure 8 racing, a wild style in which cars cross each other’s path at full speed. “People do a lot of gasping – the thrill of the close calls at the crossover at 60 or 70 mph,” says Scott Nigh, news director at the Speedrome. “We were kind of extreme decades before all these other extreme motorsports.” The Saturday after Labor Day, the Speedrome hosts the annual World Figure 8 Championship, a 3-hour endurance race, bringing around 6,000 fans to the track.
Creeks, traffic noise are factors to consider
Pleasant Run and Lick Creek – as well as several tributaries – cut across the neighborhood, so there are flood risks in the areas closest to those bodies of water. Also, the convenience of the neighborhood means most homes are within earshot of heavily trafficked roads -- with heavy trucks often in the mix.
East Gate grew up in the 1950s and '60s thanks to the Ford manufacturing plant.
