Garfield Park
Conservatory among Garfield Park's many amenities
Garfield Park, opened in 1876 and named after President James Garfield following his assassination, isn’t just notable for its historic value to Indianapolis. For starters, it’s home to Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden. The indoor Conservatory houses tropical plants and waterfalls, while the outdoor Sunken Garden shines with a spring tulip display and thousands of summer annuals. The park also features an art gallery at Garfield Park Arts Center and outdoor concerts at MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts. There are also traditional recreational amenities like playing fields, pickleball courts, an outdoor aquatic center, and both outdoor and indoor basketball courts. For good measure, there’s also an Indianapolis Public Library branch at the park.Park provides a welcoming space for events
In spring and summer months, the Garfield Park Neighbors Association sponsors a Saturday morning Farmers Market at the park. The Neighbors Association also holds annual events such as an Art Walk and neighborhood yard sale. Garfield Park Arts Center holds a free annual art and music festival at the park. The WonderRoad Festival, though on hiatus in 2024, has brought major acts like Weezer, Vampire Weekend and Jason Isbell to the MacAllister Amphitheatre stage in previous years.Housing styles popular in 1920s and '30s are prominent
Garfield Park came first, but its namesake neighborhood wasn’t far behind. The median home age here is 96 years, with the bungalows and Craftsman styles popular in the era between World Wars predominant. Houses in need of rehab range from $80,000 to $150,000. Houses that have already been redone can sell between $120,000-400,000. “The closer to the park you are, the more desirable,” Forrest says.Garfield Park businesses foster sense of community and history
Garfield Brewery welcomes residents and their dogs to utilize its patio just a block from the park. The Brewery also hosts Neighbors Association committee meetings. Neighboring Helm Coffee, which roasts its beans in-house, is another popular neighborhood gathering place. Barringer’s -- a former hangout of infamous Hoosier outlaw John Dillinger – originally opened in 1879, then re-opened in 2019 after the building sat vacant for a decade. Once known as the last stop for alcohol before the city's southern limits, Barringer’s now earns its reputation from its pizza and events like Friday Night Music Bingo. "We are doing our best to continue the history and great reputation of the establishment we bought," says co-owner Rob Odendahl. Shelby Street Tavern, open since 1934, is another venerable neighborhood watering hole with an upstairs speakeasy offering a variety of cocktails. For groceries, Aldi and Safeway have locations near the neighborhood.Multiple school choices available in Garfield Park
Public, charter and private schools are available for Garfield Park students. Adelante at Emma Donnan School 72 is a K-8 Indianapolis Public School with a C-minus rating on Niche. Students are zoned to attend George Washington High School, which, with 800 students, has the smallest enrollment among IPS high schools. George Washington has a C-rating. Christel House Academy South, an IPS charter school, receives a B-minus rating. Students would move on to the newly opened Christel House Watanabe High School. The neighborhood's private options include K-8 Central Catholic School and Providence Cristo Del Rey High School.Multiple roads lead to downtown Indy
I-65 forms the eastern boundary of Garfield Park, which was formerly connected to neighboring Bean Creek. White River forms Garfield Park’s western boundary. Downtown Indy is a 3-mile trip up Madison Avenue or Meridian Street from the neighborhood. IndyGo’s No. 13, 31 and 90 bus routes all run through Garfield Park. The park itself is bike-friendly, but the neighborhood has a 39/100 overall bike score and 40/100 walk score.Truck traffic and flooding notable in southwestern side of neighborhood
Though prone to flooding from the White River, the western third of the neighborhood is almost entirely industrial. Trucking companies make the area a hub thanks to its proximity to Indy’s interstate highways. Truck traffic is also a regular feature on Troy Ave., especially near the I-65 entry and exit ramps.
