Mapleton-Fall Creek
Suburban Neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana
Marion County 46205

A unique collection of early 20th century architecture
When city planner George E. Kessler laid out Fall Creek Parkway in the early 1900s, the scenic boulevard became an in-demand Indianapolis address. Arts and Crafts, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival houses from the era remain here today. Nearly every home in the Meridian Park subdivision was built between 1892-1930, helping land that part of the neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Mapleton-Fall Creek homes are “solid as a rock,” says Bob Kincaid, owner and operator of Kincaid Realtors. “Some of them have been updated on the inside, and then others have just kind of been maintained.” Homes that still need some renovations range from $115,000-255,000. Homes ready for move-in can range from $234,000-578,000. Though most houses in Mapleton-Fall Creek are historic, there are also newer custom builds on old lots.Children's Museum free to neighborhood residents
Though technically across the street from Mapleton-Fall Creek, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the area’s top attraction. Mapleton-Fall Creek residents receive free membership to the hands-on museum. The neighborhood has several pocket parks in addition to offering access to the Fall Creek and Monon Trails. Mapleton-Fall Creek is also directly south of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. More than 750,000 people visit the State Fair each August.Shortridge High has long represented the neighborhood
IPS/Butler Laboratory School 60, which partners with the Butler University School of Education, serves neighborhood K-8 students with a special emphasis on arts and sciences. Butler Lab has a C-plus grade on Niche. PLA@ Louis B. Russell 48, a charter school located at a former IPS campus, is also an option. It receives a C-minus rating. St. Richard’s Episcopal is an A-rated K-8 school next door to Trinity Episcopal Church. B-rated Shortridge High, perhaps best known as the alma mater of author Kurt Vonnegut, has been in the neighborhood for a century.Houses of worship have long played important role
Several Mapleton-Fall Creek churches have played an integral role in the neighborhood for more than a century, electing to stay put even as many parishioners moved to the suburbs in the mid-1960s. Tabernacle Presbyterian, known as “Tab” locally, has operated a recreational program for 100 years, and even has an artificial turf youth football field next to the church. Broadway United Methodist welcomes nearly two dozen community partners -- including two dance troupes, a youth orchestra and a youth-led bakery -- to use its century-old sanctuary. The Indianapolis Zen Center has been in this quiet neighborhood since 1991. The Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood Association, formed in 1962, further adds to the neighborhood’s interconnected spirit. The MFCNA partners with area churches to run the Mapleton-Fall Creek Housing Corporation, which helps residents with home improvement projects.Car-dependent, but bike-friendly
Though largely car-dependent – particularly given the lack of grocery stores – the neighborhood has other transportation options. Multiple bike lanes plus a pair of trails earn Mapleton-Fall Creek a 70/100 bike score. Multiple IndyGo bus routes cross the neighborhood both north-south and east-west. And, of course, traffic along 38th St. and Fall Creek Pkwy. picks up considerably during State Fair season.Command Coffee has neighborhood's attention
Mapleton-Fall Creek is largely residential, but it does have some local dining favorites. Command Coffee, located just across Fall Creek Pkwy. From the Fall Creek Greenway Trail, is ideally situated for those grabbing a coffee before or after hitting the trail. Though housed in an intimate space, SouthPaw Soul Food has a reputation for providing side dishes that are nearly as big as the main course. However, Mapleton-Fall Creek residents must leave the neighborhood for most food options, including groceries. Options include a Kroger on the Near Northside, Needler’s Market downtown, and multiple stores in Broad Ripple.
