Historic market marks downtown Indianapolis neighborhood
A couple blocks east of Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, Market East District is a cultural center with more than a century's worth of stories to tell. Established in 2014, this neighborhood is Indy's newest official cultural district, although it has played an active role in the city's commerce since the 1800s. City Market, a registered historic landmark, was established in 1821, connecting farmers to the urban community. Until recently, it was a spot to grab a tasty meal from about a dozen vendors. The Market has constantly evolved to cater to the city's needs, and the evolution continues. It's currently undergoing a $200 million redevelopment. Meanwhile, Market East still offers all the perks of downtown living. "The walking score is very high, and there are a lot of restaurants, entertainment venues, activities and nightlife," says Carlos Higareda, Realtor with Exp Realty.
While upgrades are made, shops and restaurants are nearby
The City Market East and West Plaza Redevelopment project will revamp the block where the market is located, adding an 11-story tower, 400 housing units and upgrading public spaces. City Market is scheduled to reopen in 2026. Coffee shops, restaurants and bars are accessible within walking distance. Tinker Coffee jump-starts the day with unique drinks like an espresso lemonade. Organic groceries are always close by at the centrally-located Whole Foods. At Commissary Barber and Barista, locals enjoy a fresh-brewed coffee, a handcrafted cocktail at the Blind Tiger bar and a trim and a shave in the barber chair. The Rathskeller, located less than a mile north, has German bites like schnitzel and live music Wednesday through Saturday.
Locals live in luxury condos and townhouses
Market East is mainly known for its apartment living. However, homebuyers looking for property in the city have several options, mainly in the northern section of the neighborhood. Luxury condominiums and townhouses began popping up here in the 2000s. Firehouse Square is the neighborhood's primary townhouse development. Its stately buildings are made of brick with decorative window features and centered around a private park. Townhouses range from 760 square feet to 2,700 square feet, costing about $410,000 to $525,000. The Packard is a gated condo development built around a central courtyard. The Hudson has penthouse units with rooftop gardens and skyline views. Condos in Market East range from about 1,000 square feet to 3,000 square feet. They may cost $238,000 to $1.1 million.
Restful spots between high-rises
Green spaces are woven between high-rises. Several parks and plazas offer seating areas for a quick escape during the lunch hour. Benches provide a restful spot along the walkways at Presidential Place Park. An American Elm Tree stands tall over this park, a gift from former President George H.W. Bush. The Hot Room Indianapolis is a good space for a challenging hot yoga workout.

Vendors sell seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats and cheese, baked goods and more. The Farmers' Market takes place from May through October at Monument Circle. Whether it's the Indianapolis Colts or the Indiana Pacers, game day is a big deal in Indianapolis. Market East is about a mile from Lucas Oil Stadium and Gainbridge Fieldhouse. "The energy is very high for both teams," Higareda says. "The tailgating scene for the Colts is very active on Sundays."
