Old Northside preserves its past with pride
The only neighborhood in Indiana that was once home to an American president, Indianapolis’ Old Northside has successfully preserved the houses and charm that made it the city’s prominent place of residence in the second half of the 19th century. That includes the house of Benjamin Harrison, who left here to serve as the nation’s 23rd president from 1889-93 before returning to Indianapolis for the remainder of his lifetime. Between its grand Victorians and modern custom builds on old lots, plenty of nearby modern amenities make this one of Indy’s most popular places to live more than a century after its original heyday. "The thing I love most about the Old Northside neighborhood is you can live, work and play all within a unique historic area of our city," says resident Shay McCoy.
The Old Northside's location just north of downtown Indianapolis makes it a desirable area.

A presidential home and plenty of urban greenspace
The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, housed at his Italianate-designed home, isn’t just for history buffs. “Unless there’s a private event booked, the grounds are always open to the public,” says Presidential Site special events and marketing manager Lindsey Beckley. “People tour the gardens or do yoga on the lawn. We encourage our neighbors to come and enjoy the space.” Great Oak Commons – designed as an homage to Victorian-era parks and meant for “contemplation or reflection” -- adds to the neighborhood’s historic feel. So does Shawn Grove Park. Though its playground is modern, the picnic pavilion is designed to mimic the neighborhood’s Victorian homes. In the neighborhood’s southeast corner, Frank and Judy O’Bannon Soccer Park and O’Bannon Playground, named for Indiana’s late 47th governor and his wife, provide another outdoor outlet in the neighborhood.

16th Street provides array of dining
Tinker Street restaurant, opened along the neighborhood’s 16th Street boundary in 2015, features a rotating seasonal menu and was named one of USA Today’s eight best places to eat in the Midwest. Two essential Indy coffee shops – PROVIDER Coffee & Cocktail Lounge and Foundry Provisions – are also on 16th St. Gallery on 16th, which features a Mediterranean-inspired brunch menu, is another popular way to start a day. And one of the neighborhood’s longest-running mainstays is Greg’s Our Place, a pioneering LGBQT bar in operation since 1980. Throughout the year, Our Place also hosts events benefiting multiple community non-profit organizations. A Kroger on 16th St. is the neighborhood's nearest grocery store.

Historic venues offer cultural events
Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site hosts several community events, including an Easter Egg Roll tradition he brought back to Indy from the White House. Other annual events include the Juneteenth celebration, an Independence Day Social every July 4th and the Wicket World of Croquet tournament each August. The croquet event, now 30 years old, features 48 teams decked out in all-white attire. The Indianapolis Propylaeum, located in the neighborhood since 1923, was founded by leading women’s rights activist May Wright Sewall and continues with its mission today. The Propylaeum hosts various regular programs ranging from front-porch concerts to seminars about local historical preservation efforts. Harrison Center, a 65,000-square foot community center, is dedicated to serving the city via art, music, education and grassroots activism.
Newer custom builds join stately Victorians
It’s called Old Northside for a reason – many of its homes have been here a very long time. But the median age for an Old Northside home is only 69 years because of the number of post-2000 custom builds on old lots. Condos around 600 square feet in size range from $155,000-$162,500, while larger condos have sold between $220,000-$552,500. Houses range from $234,000-$1.49 million.
