Historic neighborhood footsteps from Downtown Indy's modern amenities
As its name indicates, the Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood is not a new kid on the block in Indianapolis. But Saint Joe, as it's known to residents, isn’t strictly a blast from the past. The neighborhood is almost a tiny island surrounded by the many modern amenities, towering buildings and busy sounds of Downtown Indianapolis. Though its brick-paved side streets are a nod to history, the neighborhood has many newly constructed, multi-family living spaces mixed in among its more historic houses and townhouses. Thanks partly to the neighborhood's small size, there's also a strong sense of community. "They have a very close-knit neighborhood association," says Laura Walters, a Realtor with EasyStreet Realty who owns a house in the neighborhood.

One of Indy's most architecturally unique neighborhoods
The architectural diversity in the Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood is as varied as anywhere in Indianapolis, from Italianate and Queen Anne mansions built for members of Indy’s late 19th-century high society to cottages, gable-front houses and American Foursquares that would have been affordable for members of the middle class. A block of rowhouses on Alabama Street looks more like a scene from Baltimore or Philadelphia than Indy. “Those are very unusual for Indianapolis,” says Trevor St. Aubin, a Realtor with @properties Indy Urban Advisors. “I don’t know if there is anywhere else in the city where you’ll see anything quite like it.” Condos vary from units in Beaux Arts and Art Deco buildings to contemporary buildings constructed in the 2000s, ranging from $125,000 to $275,000. Townhouses sell for between $300,000 and $330,000, while single-family homes range between $400,000 and $725,000.

English Ivy's and Mass Ave nightlife minutes away
English Ivy’s, an LGBTQ+-friendly bar and grill, sits at the heart of the neighborhood. While a staple of neighborhood nightlife, it’s perhaps equally popular for its seasonal lunch and weekend brunch menus. Axum Ethiopian Restaurant – the lone Ethiopian eatery in Downtown Indy, and in St. Aubin’s opinion, the best in the entire city – is at the neighborhood’s edge. Saint Joseph is also mere blocks from Massachusetts Avenue, which is Downtown Indy’s premier dining and nightlife district. For groceries, Needler’s Fresh Market and Whole Foods are just a few blocks south of the neighborhood. “If you want to live close to Mass Ave and Indy’s true downtown, it’s in a great spot,” Waters says.

For those who appreciate the arts, Gallery 924 has rotating exhibitions, and The Cabaret theater provides an intimate setting for musical performances. Roberts Camera, the city's largest and oldest operating full-service camera shop, is a staple for Indy's amateur and professional photographers and also offers classes for those looking to get started. Indianapolis Public Library Central Branch a city gem
The Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood is an easy walk to the Indianapolis Public Library Central Branch. The library is one of Indy’s most architecturally distinctive structures, combining a Greek Doric building that opened in 1917 with a six-story glass-and-steel addition that opened in 2007. The Central Branch is home to the Center for Black Literature and Culture, a 300-seat auditorium, an outdoor reading garden, and an unimpeded view of Indy’s skyline from the sixth floor. That view includes the 24-acre Indiana World War Memorial Plaza and American Legion Mall – a peaceful greenspace featuring memorials to Hoosiers killed in America’s 20th-century wars.
