Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood
One of Indy's most architecturally unique neighborhoods
The architectural diversity in the Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood is as varied as anywhere in Indianapolis, from Italianate and Queen Anne mansions built for members of Indy’s late 19th-century high society to cottages, gable-front houses and American Foursquares that would have been affordable for members of the middle class. A block of rowhouses on Alabama Street looks more like a scene from Baltimore or Philadelphia than Indy. “Those are very unusual for Indianapolis,” says Trevor St. Aubin, a Realtor with @properties Indy Urban Advisors. “I don’t know if there is anywhere else in the city where you’ll see anything quite like it.” Condos vary from units in Beaux Arts and Art Deco buildings to contemporary buildings constructed in the 2000s, ranging from $125,000 to $275,000. Townhouses sell for between $300,000 and $330,000, while single-family homes range between $400,000 and $725,000.English Ivy's and Mass Ave nightlife minutes away
English Ivy’s, an LGBTQ+-friendly bar and grill, sits at the heart of the neighborhood. While a staple of neighborhood nightlife, it’s perhaps equally popular for its seasonal lunch and weekend brunch menus. Axum Ethiopian Restaurant – the lone Ethiopian eatery in Downtown Indy, and in St. Aubin’s opinion, the best in the entire city – is at the neighborhood’s edge. Saint Joseph is also mere blocks from Massachusetts Avenue, which is Downtown Indy’s premier dining and nightlife district. For groceries, Needler’s Fresh Market and Whole Foods are just a few blocks south of the neighborhood. “If you want to live close to Mass Ave and Indy’s true downtown, it’s in a great spot,” Waters says.Indy Arts Council, Roberts Camera fosters creativity
The neighborhood's location is conducive to creatives. The Indy Arts Council is one of the city’s top resources for visual, musical and theatrical artists, offering programs and grants to benefit aspiring local talent. For those who appreciate the arts, Gallery 924 has rotating exhibitions, and The Cabaret theater provides an intimate setting for musical performances. Roberts Camera, the city's largest and oldest operating full-service camera shop, is a staple for Indy's amateur and professional photographers and also offers classes for those looking to get started. During summertime, porch parties are a common sight around the neighborhood. Thanks to its location, the neighborhood is also convenient for walking to annual events in Downtown Indy, including the Indy Pride Parade, which travels down Massachusetts Avenue.Close to Center for Inquiry School 2 and Herron High
Most elementary students in the neighborhood attend Center for Inquiry School 2, also known as Benjamin Harrison School 2. The school was the first in Indiana to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Center for Inquiry 2 earns a B-rating from Niche. Longfellow Middle School, which is also an International Baccalaureate school, has a C-minus rating. High schoolers attend Arsenal Tech, which has a C-rating. The neighborhood’s proximity to A-rated Herron High School also appeals to parents. Herron, which is Niche’s top-ranked charter school in Indianapolis, is less than a mile north of the neighborhood.Indianapolis Public Library Central Branch a city gem
The Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood is an easy walk to the Indianapolis Public Library Central Branch. The library is one of Indy’s most architecturally distinctive structures, combining a Greek Doric building that opened in 1917 with a six-story glass-and-steel addition that opened in 2007. The Central Branch is home to the Center for Black Literature and Culture, a 300-seat auditorium, an outdoor reading garden, and an unimpeded view of Indy’s skyline from the sixth floor. That view includes the 24-acre Indiana World War Memorial Plaza and American Legion Mall – a peaceful greenspace featuring memorials to Hoosiers killed in America’s 20th-century wars.Easy access to Interstate 65
Interstate 65 forms the neighborhood’s northern boundary, making the buzz of highway traffic a constant factor. The upside is that I-65 makes reaching the rest of the region easy. Indianapolis International Airport is about 16 miles away, and Chicago is around a 3-hour drive from the neighborhood. IndyGo’s No. 5 bus stop in the neighborhood along Delaware Street. IU Health Methodist Hospital, one of four Level I Trauma Centers in the state, is less than 2 miles from the Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood.Crime rate more than doubles national average
The neighborhood’s downtown location is a factor in high crime scores. Saint Joseph Historic Neighborhood rates 9 out of 10 in the CAP Index, more than double the national average. Property crimes rate as the most common in the neighborhood.
