A rapidly transforming suburban neighborhood
For decades, Indy’s South Perry neighborhood marked the blending point where Indianapolis ends, and the suburbs begin. With its convenient access to downtown via Interstate 65, it still does. But in the past decade, it has also transformed into one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Indianapolis thanks to the arrival of thousands of Burmese refugees since 2008. South Perry and neighboring Southport have the highest concentration of Chin ethnic group members outside their home state in western Burma. In all, about 10% of the Burmese population in the United States lives in the Indianapolis area. “I think it’s really neat to see how they’ve integrated into our world,” says Bonnie Kane, a decades-long area resident who has volunteered with various organizations that help the Burmese population community transition to life in Indiana.
South Perry is located near to Interstate 65, which offers easy access to Downtown Indianapolis.
South Perry is a great place to both visit and put down roots long term.

Busy highways shape neighborhood
South Perry can be a bit noisy outside of its suburban subdivisions. Interstate 65 forms the eastern border, and U.S. Route 31 also cuts through the neighborhood. There’s also ambulance traffic to the Franciscan Health and Ascension St. Vincent medical centers. As in most of Indianapolis, public transportation options are limited. The U.S. 31 and Madison Avenue bus lines run towards downtown in the western half of the neighborhood.
A busy shopping and dining scene with a Burmese flavor
The influence of the neighborhood’s newcomers is unmistakable: there are nearly a dozen restaurants and grocery stores serving noodle and curry dishes, tea salad and other Burmese specialties. These blend in with local favorites like Ale Emporium, which has more than 50 beers on tap to go along with its trademarked Hermanaki wings – a blend of teriyaki and a house-made secret sauce that’s only offered here. The highly regarded Mocha Nut is known for its mochas and friendly atmosphere, but also offers 32-ounce growlers of cold brew for customers on the go. South Perry is also home to the only Costco location on Indy’s south side as well as several shopping centers featuring both local shops and national chains. Greenwood Park Mall, just across County Line Road in Greenwood, is the largest on Indy’s south side with more than 150 stores. In addition, five of the south side’s largest auto dealerships are located on U.S. 31 in South Perry.

Churches play important community roles
Southport Presbyterian Church has been here since the community’s inception, from its humble origins in settler Jacob Smock’s log cabin in 1826 to its present sprawling sanctuary next to I-65. “We welcome everybody, any time,” says Kane, a congregation member since 1976. The church’s annual Easter Egg hunt is among the events open to the community, and so is its daycare center. On the west side of South Perry, the Indiana Chin Baptist Church offers English- and Hakha Chin-language services.
