Seasonal produce at Waterman's Family Farm
Farm-fresh eats are easy to come by in Southeast Indianapolis. Waterman's Family Farm opened in 1978 as a venue for locals to pick their own produce. Strawberries are available for picking in June, which is also a good time to turn out for the annual Strawberry Festival. Waterman's Farm Market offers a variety of seasonal produce including sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, and bell peppers in the summer. "People come back for the tomatoes and sweet corn," Waterman says. "They're so different from what you get at the store." More groceries are available 3 miles away at Kroger or 5 miles away at Walmart Neighborhood Market.Locals can travel to nearby neighborhoods when they want to dine out. About 4 miles away, Baan Thai Bistro offers comforting Thai dishes like pad Thai and tropical fried rice served in a pineapple. Southeast Indianapolis is just 3 miles from Beech Grove, offering trendy shopping and dining experiences along Main Street. "Beech Grove has been experiencing a renaissance that has come with independent coffee shops and restaurants," says Susan Forrest, Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis. Napoli Villa offers traditional dishes like lasagna served in an old-school Italian environment with white tablecloths and candles. The street offers a fun nighttime experience with several casual bars.
Fun and games at the Marion County Fair
The community comes together for the annual Marion County Fair. What started as a street fair in 1930 is now a big celebration that includes fireworks, live music, a petting zoo and tasty fair food. Residents cheer on their favorite four-legged friend in the K9 Frisbee Dogs showcase and climb high above the neighborhood on the Ferris wheel. The fair celebrates Marion's agricultural history with several livestock barns. Waterman's Family Farm is another venue for highly anticipated events, with hay rides in the fall, festive lights in the winter and juicy strawberries in the summer.Established neighborhoods and newer subdivisions
On the north side, older neighborhoods have shady, tree-lined streets, while to the south, newer subdivisions have more contemporary housing styles. Ranch-style homes and petite bungalow-style homes make up the older neighborhoods, originating from the early to mid-20th century. Many bungalows come with porches or covered front entryways. Prices start around $100,000 for these smaller homes ranging around 1,000 square feet. Mature trees tower over the neighborhood's older areas, providing lots of shade over spacious front lawns. New traditional homes built after 2000 make up the neighborhood's south side, with brick and vinyl siding on the exterior and attached two-car garages. Averaging around 2,000 square feet, these homes are on the market for around $270,000. While there aren't many sidewalks, many residential areas have lower speed limits.Locals stroll through the trees at Ellenberger Park
Irvington Baseball and Softball teaches kids how to hit a home run, beginning with t-ball at age four. Practices and games take place on the fields at McNulty Park. Rustic Driving Range and Mini Golf is another family-friendly venue. It offers a true miniature version of a golf course, with real grass, obstacles and trees. About 3 miles north, Ellenberger Park's 42 acres include a seasonal swimming pool, playgrounds, tennis courts and a sand volleyball court. Thickets of trees offer plenty of shade over the winding walking paths. The park is also home to the Irvington Farmers Market from June through October.Music and art thrive at Warren Central High
K-12 schools are located within 7 miles of the neighborhood through the Metropolitan School District of Warren Township. Youngsters can start their journey at Lowell Elementary, which is located inside the neighborhood. It earns a C-plus from Niche. About 3 miles east, Raymond Park Middle School earns a C. Teens can attend Warren Central High, which is located about 7 miles northeast, and earns a B-minus. Warren Central may suit students who want to study visual and performing arts. It offers more than 30 music and theater courses.Southeastern Ave leads to downtown Indy
Southeast Indianapolis's roads provide convenient routes for drivers and bikers. Bordering the neighborhood's east side, I-465 is a circular route around the outskirts of the city. It leads to Indianapolis International Airport, located about 17 miles away. Cutting through the center of the neighborhood, Southeastern Ave is a convenient route to get downtown. It also has a dedicated bike lane. Commuters will experience some traffic during the typical rush hours. Residents can take the number 56 bus to get to Beech Grove, Walmart and the Transit Center.Flooding is a factor along the creek
Areas along Lick Creek, which cuts through the neighborhood from Emerson Avenue to Brookville Road, are at high risk for flooding.
