Downtown Indy's food, shopping and sports hub

Indianapolis’s Wholesale District is named for the abundant trade and industrial activity that characterized it at the turn of the 20th century. Today, this neighborhood offers copious entertainment and nightlife options within blocks of mid- and high-rise condo buildings. As the sun falls for the evening, the streets glow from the signs and marquees outside local businesses. In the morning, sidewalks fill with professionals heading to nearby workplaces — including the headquarters of a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical giant. And when bands, comedians and visiting sports teams come to town, locals flock to various big-ticket entertainment venues.

From jazz shows to Circle Centre Mall

Some of the longest-running businesses in the city — and even Indiana — call the Wholesale District home. While widespread chain restaurants and retailers are primarily concentrated in a central mall, surrounding blocks house many Indy-exclusive establishments. St. Elmo’s Steakhouse has been around since 1902 and is known for its legendarily spicy shrimp cocktail. “They shave horseradish fresh every morning to put in it,” says Visit Indy Senior Director of Public Relations Morgan Snyder. “It’s sinus-clearing for sure.” Slippery Noodle Inn, Indiana’s oldest bar, opened in 1850 and was a favorite haunt for 1930s bank robber John Dillinger. “His bullet holes are still in the wall,” Snyder says. Today, the restaurant draws locals with jazz and blues performances. For a more buttoned-up concert experience, music aficionados can catch the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Live entertainment is also available at Helium Comedy Club, where visiting talent ranges from local stand-ups to “Saturday Night Live” alums. Helium is attached to Circle Centre Mall, where 60-plus businesses and a movie theater operate beneath a long, glass roof. Groceries are available blocks from the neighborhood at Kroger and Whole Foods Market.

Compact one-bedrooms and multimillion-dollar penthouses

Homes for sale in the Wholesale District mainly consist of condominium developments. The oldest buildings here date back to the 1880s, while others were constructed in the early 2000s. Among the latter are condo buildings like Allen Plaza, where one-bedroom condos under 900 square feet start at around $300,000. Two-bedroom units can cost up to about $600,000, with price dependent on amenities, square footage and view. Meanwhile, the Wholesale District’s most expensive properties are in Conrad Indianapolis, a towering hotel with a few exclusive condominiums. Here, a luxury home spanning thousands of square feet can reach $5 million.

Home of the Colts, Pacers and Fever

Gainbridge Fieldhouse is a frequent favorite for Indy sports fans, hosting the NBA’s Pacers and the WNBA’s Fever. It also frequently brings big-name entertainment to the neighborhood, including famous comics like Adam Sandler and rock bands like KISS. In February 2024, the venue will host the NBA All-Star Game. Outside the field house, the recently opened Bicentennial Unity Plaza invites locals to hang out and play basketball. During the winter, its basketball court transforms into an ice rink. “It has been a game-changer as far as public spaces go in downtown Indianapolis and within the Wholesale District,” Snyder says. Indoor courts are available a few blocks south at the Irsay Family YMCA, which also features an aquatic center, a weight room and an indoor track. Soccer players compete across the street at the 3-acre South Street Square Park. More sports excitement happens year-round at Lucas Oil Stadium — home of the Indianapolis Colts — immediately southwest of the neighborhood. Local seasonal events include the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, centered around the Soldiers & Sailors Monument in the neighborhood’s northern section. Thousands of runners participate in the event every fall.
