Rural living in the Hay Capital of the World

East of Tulsa, Inola is known as “The Hay Capital of the World,” due to its hay fields and miles of countryside. “We have some of the best hay here. A lot of good Blue Stem, which is good for horses and cattle farms,” says Real Estate Agent Tommy Dyer, owner of Tommy Dyer Real Estate and lifelong Inola resident. When the area was first settled, it was part of Creek Nation within Native American territory. Now, the rural area is starting to grow and has a town center that brings the community together. “There are some new businesses coming in, so it’s going to start getting bigger soon,” Dyer says.

Acres of farms and houses

Neighborhood streets in the town center of Inola are mixed with both older homes and new construction. “We’ve got a new addition getting built west of the town. It’ll add over 150 homes in the next few years,” Dyer says. Homebuyers who want something small can find expansive ranch-style houses for $150,000 to $250,000. There are also many Craftsman homes in the neighborhood with gabled roofs that go for $225,000 to $450,000. Large farmhouses with barn-style architecture and large front porches can range from anywhere between $350,000 to over 1 million. These properties can come with acres of land that add to the value and price.

Challenge a friend to a game of pickleball on the brand-new courts that were installed in 2023. Travis Grigg Memorial Baseball/Softball Park has four fields for teams to practice and play on. When the weather gets cold, residents can exercise at the Inola Fitness Center on Commercial Street.

Local businesses along Commercial Street

Despite its primarily rural landscape, Inola has a town center that gives its community plenty of options for shopping and dining. Commercial stores and local businesses can be found along East Commercial Street and Broadway Avenue. Shop for trendy clothes at Three Feathers Boutique and find cute collectibles and home décor at Longhorn Mercantile. When looking for a bite to eat, Graham’s Bakery and Café specializes in old-school country fixings. Chicken fried steak and steak sandwiches are among the local favorites. Pop’s & Gigi’s Café is a little down the street but serves both breakfast and dinner platters. Those who would rather cook their own meals can head to Harps Food Stores along Oklahoma State Highway 88 and get fresh produce. For even more retail options, residents travel the 13.2 miles to downtown Claremore. There’s a Walmart Supercenter and Harbor Freight for daily essentials, plus a Reasor’s grocery store. While there, people can grab a quick meal at the many fast-food joints, including Sonic, Chick-fil-A and Whataburger.

Commuting into Tulsa

As expansive as the area is, most residents rely on their own vehicles to get around. Inola is filled with commuters who use US Route 412 to travel to and from the township. “There’s not that many people who work locally. The majority of them work elsewhere, like Tulsa,” Dyer says. The Tulsa International Airport is 23.6 miles away for anyone who needs to travel far.

Hay Days harvest celebration

Every year, the Inola Hay Days Celebration is held to commemorate the harvest season. The tradition started in 1960 and has since become a community-wide event that draws people from towns all over. A parade kicks off the event, followed by two days of carnival rides, live music, a rodeo, livestock shows and food vendors. “For years, a local ranch would donate meat, and we’d eat for days,” Dyer says. Hay sculptures and decorative bales are placed all throughout the town in celebration.
