A tiny community near the Jersey Shore
When new residents move to Interlaken, Bob Waitt often gets a call. As Interlaken’s historian, Waitt is the one whom new homeowners reach out to with questions about the history of their new purchases. “I get a lot of calls from people when they first move in,” Waitt says. “I can tell them when it was built, who lived there and who passed away there.” An upscale New Jersey community with about 800 residents, folks are quick to get acquainted in Interlaken. It shares its name with a Swiss vacation town, but this community doesn’t see many tourists. Instead, it’s a place where residents escape the fray of the nearby Jersey Shore and live among an array of well-maintained, high-dollar homes.

Stately homes and big price tags in Interlaken
Interlaken is strictly residential, with large homes standing on either side of wide streets. For 35 years the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the community’s lush tree canopy, which includes mature oaks and cedars sprouted from residents' front lawns. The average home is nearly 3,000 square feet, larger than what's typical across the country. Homes often showcase classic designs, with Colonial Revival, American Foursquare and Tudor styles seen throughout Interlaken. Homes aren’t cheap; prices start in the low $800,000s for a three-bedroom house, reaching $3 million for a seven-bedroom home. People can expect a slow-paced housing market in Interlaken, with likely fewer than five homes on the market at any time, Waitt says. “It’s a town where there’s not a lot of change as far as residents go.”

Boating and skating on Deal Lake
Like its Swiss counterpart, Interlaken is situated between two lakes. Boaters and anglers set out on Deal Lake from private residential docks or Deal Lake Boat Ramp, across the lake from Interlaken in Asbury Park. When the temperature drops, locals slip on skates and glide across the frozen surface. Locals can play tennis or softball at Interlaken Park, as well as utilize the shaded playground. It’s roughly a mile to the beaches in Loch Arbour and Asbury Park, and Waitt says he doesn’t worry about parking when heading to the coast. “I can walk from my house to the ocean.” Visitors to Asbury Park can pop into Silverball Retro Arcade, where players smash buttons on pinball machines and arcade games that date back to the ‘50s.

Restaurants and retail in neighboring Asbury Park
The neighborhood is nothing but homes and green space, but when residents want to go out they may walk or drive to Asbury Park, where restaurants and shops dot the blocks of the seaside town. Customers munch on pork rolls at the booths and counter seats of Frank’s Deli & Restaurant, which has remained cash-only since it opened in 1960. Interlaken residents are often cycling around their neighborhood, and they may get their bikes repaired at Asbury Park Cyclery. Chain retailers are in Ocean Township, 2 miles from Interlaken. There shoppers can make runs to Wegmans, Target and Costco. In the neighboring towns of Loch Arbour and Asbury Park, religious residents can visit one of four churches, two synagogues or a mosque. Locals can receive medical care at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, 4 miles away.
