A quiet Chicago village where people come to stay

Situated between Barrington and Palatine, Inverness is a residential community full of rambling streets lined with homes and mature trees. “Inverness is a small village,” says Broker Denise Curry with Baird and Warner, who has lived in Inverness for 40 years. “It doesn’t have a post office or shopping of any kind. It was developed in the 40s for people to get away from Chicago.” Today, Inverness does have some parks, but that quiet oasis from the city remains, offering a place where people can move for a slower pace of life surrounded by an active community. “A lot of people who live in Inverness stay in Inverness,” says Broker Rob Morrison with Coldwell Banker.

Brick homes on winding tree-lined streets

Houses in Inverness are often brick New Traditional homes sitting on at least an acre of land along narrow streets lined with trees. “Inverness is unique because it doesn’t have sidewalks or street lights. They are winding roads,” Curry says. “People walk their dogs on these winding streets, and you’ll see everybody out.” Houses often have circular driveways, and yards are full of mature trees that also hang over the roads for a more private feel. The homes here typically list between 600,000 and 900,000, but there are also townhomes available in certain subdivisions, like Ashbury, that list for closer to 450,000.

Drive or take the Metrarail into downtown Chicago

Even though Chicago is more than 30 miles from Inverness, residents have multiple ways to get into the city and elsewhere with I-90 so close to the neighborhood. “Inverness is right in the middle of Palatine and I-90, Morrison says. “People can get easy access to the highway, O’Hare and downtown Chicago. Palatine is literally a five-minute drive from Inverness.” When people don’t want to drive, the Metrarail Union Pacific Northwest (UP-NW) stops at Palatine station 3.1 miles away and connects to downtown. In Inverness itself, residents usually rely on cars because there are no sidewalks or public transportation available. O’Hare International Airport is 19 miles from Inverness. The nearest hospital is Ascension Saint Alexius, 7 miles away.

Palatine's summer concert series and local festivals

At Sounds of Summer in Palatine, Inverness residents can attend free concerts held throughout the week all summer long. There's even a battle of the bands where residents can enter and show off their skills. In Inverness, residents can find local events and activities hosted at places of worship. “There’s a big Greek church, and they have a big Greek festival in the summer that everyone can walk to,” Curry says. For Independence Day, residents can often see the fireworks shows from Barrington and Palatine on their properties. “We’re also only a 40- to 50-minute train ride to any of the festivals in Chicago,” Curry says. “We’re not far from the United Center, where all the hockey games are, either.”
