A rural community at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains
In the far west region of the Mojave Desert, just a stone's throw from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, China Lake Acres offers quaint residences and breathtaking mountain views, miles from the nearest commercial hub. "China Lake Acres lies just outside the Ridgecrest city limits,” says Clint Freeman, a local Realtor with RidgecrestCaHomes. “It’s mostly dirt roads and modest homes, but people find it attractive because they have the freedom to do what they want with their land. There’s no homeowners association to worry about and people have room for animals or multiple vehicles.” The rural community has quiet streets and an atmosphere reminiscent of old western films like The Big Country, which was filmed just 30 miles south in Red Rock Canyon State Park. The neighborhood is around 7 miles west of Downtown Ridgecrest, which offers a small selection of restaurants and amenities.
Dirt roads and freedom of ownership in China Lake Acres
The residential streets closest to California state Route 178 are paved, while the majority of the neighborhood sits along dirt roads. Ranch-style houses and manufactured homes make up the housing scene of China Lake Acres, and most sit on lots of a half-acre or more, with some reaching beyond 3 acres. Most properties have fenced-in yards, with palms, mesquite trees and shrubbery throughout. “One of the big draws to the area is affordability,” says Freeman. “The Ridgecrest area has some of the lowest home prices in California.” Single-family homes range from $80,000 to around $265,000, while empty lots with 1 to 2 acres go for $12,000 to $35,000. “It’s quite hot and dry here, especially in the summer,” Freeman says. “But it’s like that all across the valley, and it’s something you get used to when you live here.” Additionally, the neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
