Conveniently located riverfront community

Iona is a charming, diversified waterfront community nestled against the Caloosahatchee River. The neighborhood is extensive, stretching from Palmetto Point on one end to Jonathon Harbour on the other. Some 11,000 call this area home, and it’s easy to see why with such a prime waterfront location. Aside from the various opportunities the river presents, like canoeing its thirty-eight-mile length or bass fishing, folks here have access to a golf course to practice their drive. “Iona is conveniently located; you’re within minutes of numerous gorgeous beaches,” says Paula Towell, Fort Myers resident and Realtor with John R. Wood Properties.

Iona's unique blend of manufactured and single-family residences

The range of homes in Iona is large and varied, occupied by cul de sacs, 55+, and gated communities. Each of these micro-communities has its own unique shape from a bird’s eye view, but one thing they share is a beautiful landscape of lush grass and palm trees. Mobile homes are commonplace farther inland. These manufactured homes appear in rows along dense lots and fetch anywhere from $75,000 to $150,000. “The higher-priced mobile homes usually have access to golf,” says Towell. The Spanish eclectic style is popular among single-family builds, boasting barrel tile roofing and a beige exterior. Ranch styles are also common, featuring single-car driveways, as are bungalows with welcoming archways. Single-family homes in this neighborhood average between $330,000 and $650,000. Larger estates with four or five bedrooms and more than 3,000 square feet sit on the river’s edge. Such a view costs around $1 million and can climb to $3 million.

Parks with reservable spaces

Residents have a couple of options regarding time spent at local parks. Harlem Heights Park on Concourse Drive is a spot with a large pavilion to host groups. It’s also right next to the playground, so parents can watch their kids and be at ease. The jungle gym features swings and the typical obstacle amenities. For teens and adults, the basketball courts and football fields are a great way to get active; make sure to reserve the space 72 hours in advance. Neighbors can gather around the community grills for some grilled meats on a summer afternoon.

Surf and turf dining options

Seafood is popular fare at the local restaurants, as one might expect. Deep Lagoon Seafood and Oyster House is one example. They serve anything from small plates of oysters Rockefeller and crab rangoons to fried clam strips or a chill seafood tower. Locals can book a reservation and, when they arrive, sit at the glass bar for a drink or relax on the patio for a view of the water. Italian cuisine is also within reach at Terra Nostra, the 2023 Wine Spectator Award winner. This spot has a lovely wine list and specializes in signature martinis. The dinner menu is equally appealing, with recognizable pasta dishes and savory veal or lamb cuts. Just before McGregor Boulevard winds south toward Fort Myers Beach, folks will notice the local Publix Super Market. The chain has all the grocery basics, and Target is half a mile away for anything else.

Golfing and fishing in spades

Golfing and fishing are core elements of life on the Florida coast. Shell Point is a golf course where non-members can stop in and play a few rounds. The staff are happy to provide lessons onsite for those looking to improve their game. Iona visitors would be remiss if they didn’t try their luck at the river’s edge for some common snook or red drum fish. Fishing aficionados should know that certain species have size limits and seasons.
