Galway Hills
Single-family homes on ¼-acre lots
Galway Hills comprises about 200 single-family homes on winding streets lined with sparse-to-modest tree cover. Some trees are evergreen, while deciduous ones brighten the streetscapes with reds, oranges and yellows during the fall. The houses were mainly built in the 1990s and 2000s and feature New Traditional, ranch-style and split-level designs. They tend to be about 2,450 square feet, roughly 500 over the U.S. average. Most sit on lots just over ¼ acre, some with fenced-in backyards, others backing up to shared green spaces or wooded ponds. Due to their recent construction and considerable square footage, homes are typically valued at about $120,000 over the Iowa City norm. Prices start in the low $300,000s, which might get a four-bedroom, roughly 2,000-square-foot split-level from 2003. New Traditional homes with nearly 4,000 square feet from the late 2000s can cost up to $700,000.Next to Iowa's top high school
West High School operates immediately east of Galway Hills, within walking distance of many residents. Niche gives West High an A-plus and calls it Iowa’s best public high school. Its 1,400-plus students regularly lead the state in standardized test scores and National Merit Scholarships. Younger students are zoned for Norman Borlaug Elementary, which is about 1 mile north of the neighborhood and has a B-plus from Niche. Northwest Junior High, rated a B, is about 3 miles north. At the corner of Melrose and U.S. 218
Melrose Avenue — one of Iowa City’s primary thoroughfares — and Route 218 both run alongside Galway Hills and intersect at its northwest corner. Melrose offers a direct route east to The University of Iowa, leading straight to Kinnick Stadium for Hawkeyes football games. University faculty and those who work at its large medical campus frequently commute via Melrose. Meanwhile, Route 218 — part of Avenue of the Saints, a highway connecting St. Louis to St. Paul — connects to I-380 and serves commuters headed outside Iowa City. “We have a lot of people who work in Cedar Rapids, so there’s a lot of traffic between the two cities: some going up there and some coming to us,” Pretorius says.Four miles from Coral Ridge Mall
Galway Hills residents are about a 4-mile drive from Coral Ridge Mall, a large indoor shopping center featuring an ice rink and a movie theater. Smaller commercial areas nearby include Walden Square about ½ mile east, which includes a Fareway Meat & Grocery supermarket. A few doors down is Java House Coffee Roasters, part of a small Iowa chain serving house-roasted coffee in a chic, relaxing setting. Big-name retailers within 3 miles of Galway Hills include Walmart Supercenter and Menards.Gym space and a public golf course nearby

Its Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex offers memberships to the public and features 20 tennis courts, fitness rooms and indoor turf fields. Just south of the complex, Hawkeyes fans can watch the university’s women’s soccer and field hockey teams play. Golfers can head about 1 mile east on Melrose to play 18 holes or hit the driving range at the public Finkbine Golf Course.Noise pollution near Route 218
