Convenience for commuters meets semi-private suburbia
A semi-private suburban setting combines with convenience for commuters in Galway Hills, one of Iowa City’s westernmost neighborhoods. Established in the 1990s, this entirely residential community features larger-than-average single-family homes that are removed from the city’s busy downtown and The University of Iowa campus. However, its placement at the apex of two prominent commuter routes offers quick trips to university and out-of-town workers. “It’s a great neighborhood for people who work at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics due to the quick access through Melrose,” says Realtor Adam Pretorius of Lepic-Kroger, REALTORS, a 25-year Iowa City resident. “And it has easy access to Interstate 380, which offers easy access to all area amenities within just a short drive, or for people community to other cities.” The neighborhood is also adjacent to one of Iowa’s top public high schools.

Single-family homes on ¼-acre lots
Galway Hills comprises about 200 single-family homes on winding streets lined with sparse-to-modest tree cover. Some trees are evergreen, while deciduous ones brighten the streetscapes with reds, oranges and yellows during the fall. The houses were mainly built in the 1990s and 2000s and feature New Traditional, ranch-style and split-level designs. They tend to be about 2,450 square feet, roughly 500 over the U.S. average. Most sit on lots just over ¼ acre, some with fenced-in backyards, others backing up to shared green spaces or wooded ponds. Due to their recent construction and considerable square footage, homes are typically valued at about $120,000 over the Iowa City norm. Prices start in the low $300,000s, which might get a four-bedroom, roughly 2,000-square-foot split-level from 2003. New Traditional homes with nearly 4,000 square feet from the late 2000s can cost up to $700,000.
Many homes in Galway Hills are relatively new, with some being built less than 10 years ago.

At the corner of Melrose and U.S. 218
Melrose Avenue — one of Iowa City’s primary thoroughfares — and Route 218 both run alongside Galway Hills and intersect at its northwest corner. Melrose offers a direct route east to The University of Iowa, leading straight to Kinnick Stadium for Hawkeyes football games. University faculty and those who work at its large medical campus frequently commute via Melrose. Meanwhile, Route 218 — part of Avenue of the Saints, a highway connecting St. Louis to St. Paul — connects to I-380 and serves commuters headed outside Iowa City. “We have a lot of people who work in Cedar Rapids, so there’s a lot of traffic between the two cities: some going up there and some coming to us,” Pretorius says.
Highway 218 connects to Interstates 80 and 380, giving access to Cedar Rapids and Davenport.
Galway Hills sits at the interchange of Melrose Avenue and Hwy 218.
