A suburb near the heart of Iowa City
Oak Grove provides its residents direct access to all of Iowa City's entertainment and cultural offerings, including its museums, college sporting events and music festivals. Highly rated public schools in the Iowa City Community School District
Longfellow Elementary School is less than half a mile to the neighborhood's north. The school has an A-minus Niche rating. The B-rated South East Junior High School is 2 miles to the neighborhood's southeast. The A-minus Niche-rated Iowa City High School is less than 2 miles to the neighborhood's northeast. The Grammy Foundation has named City High a Signature School three times for its outstanding commitment to music education. The University of Iowa is about 2 miles northwest of Oak Grove. The school is made up of roughly 30,000 undergraduates and postgraduates. Its famous writers' workshop's faculty has included Kurt Vonnegut, Philip Roth and Marilynne Robinson.

Older homes that require slightly more upkeep
"The neighborhood has a lot of historical homes," Armstrong says. "They require more upkeep." Ranch-style houses from the 1950s sell for between $180,000 and $250,000. Turn-of-the-century two-story houses are valued between $280,000 and $500,000. Cape Cod-style houses from the 1940s sell for as low as $215,000, and turn-of-the-century Craftsman-style houses sell for as high as $250,000. A train track passes along the neighborhood's northern border. "The track isn't very active, so the train hasn't hindered anyone from buying that I know of," Armstrong says.

Cultural offerings in the Iowa City Downtown District
The Iowa City Downtown District attracts visitors for its artistic and cultural offerings. The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art hosts year-round events, like its wine night and children's art-making workshops. Since 1858, the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History has told the story of life on Earth. For live music, films, plays and lectures, people visit the downtown's 725-seat Englert Theatre. The downtown holds the annual Iowa City Jazz Festival, which includes artists' booths, concessions and over 20 musical acts. The University of Iowa's NCAA Division I sports teams are a source of entertainment about 2 miles northwest of Oak Grove. During football season, close to 70,000 fans pack into Kinnick Stadium to root for the Hawkeyes. The college's wrestling, basketball and gymnastics teams compete at the campus' Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

There are several dining options within a half mile west of Oak Grove. They can be reached using the sidewalks. Jobsite along Maiden Lane is known for its casual digs, live music, cold beer and bar food. Along South Gilbert Street, people enjoy international cuisine at Onnuri North Korean BBQ and I Love Fufu, which serves African dishes. Deluxe Cakes & Pastries is less than a half-mile to the community's north along Summit Street. It features a patio where patrons can sit at round tables under umbrellas. "The bakery is the best thing ever. It's so charming," Armstrong says. Less than half a mile northwest of the neighborhood, there is a cluster of eateries, including Trumpet Blossom Café, popular for its seasonal vegan dishes and quaint barn-style aesthetic. The restaurant hosts performances by local folk and rock musicians. Half a mile south, Grizzly's South Side Pub & Grill rings with the crack of pool balls and shines with neon beer signs. Hy-Vee Grocery Store is about 2 miles east of the neighborhood. Also less than half a mile to the neighborhood's west, there are businesses like Geoff's Bike & Ski and Musician's Pro Shop & School of Music. The interior of Dark Cloud Tattoos, on the community's southwest corner, is decked out with anime figurines, and its artists specialize in anime-inspired designs.
Residents can dine in or take out some of the best African food in Iowa City at I Love Fufu.

Greenspaces within walking distance
Folks can walk to Oak Grove Park, located within the neighborhood. The park has picnic tables as well as a playground. Longfellow Nature Trail begins at the eastern point of the neighborhood before passing through a tunnel beneath the train track and leading walkers to a wooded area. The city allows kids to paint the tunnel with colorful designs. Riverfront Crossing Park is half a mile to the neighborhood's southwest. The 17-acre greenspace offers a shelter, tables and a trail alongside the Iowa River.

Getting around Iowa City
"It's not a high-traffic area," Armstrong says. "Kirkwood Avenue has slow traffic, going like 25 or 30 miles an hour." The neighborhood's streets are lined with sidewalks, making it easy for residents to get to restaurants without having to worry about parking. Public bus stops line Kirkwood Avenue. The Iowa City Downtown District is a mile north via East Benton Street and South Clinton Street. Cedar Rapids is 29 miles north via Interstate 380. In Cedar Rapids, people take domestic flights out of Eastern Iowa Airport.
The quarter-mile trail runs along a creek and features wildflowers and great bird watching.
Iowa City busses run along Kirkwood Avenue on the south side of Oak Grove.
