A suburb removed from the hustle and bustle of Iowa City
Four miles from the Iowa City Downtown District, Southwest Estates is a small suburban enclave removed from the city's hustle and bustle. The neighborhood is ideal for quiet strolls and family living. Most residents buy houses there for the long term. "There's not a high turnover rate. The University of Iowa and the hospital are big employers for people who live there," says Realtor Kris Westfall, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Iowa Realty. The neighborhood is a mile west of the Avenue of Saints, which connects residents to Cedar Rapids. "It's a standard suburb," Westfall says. "There aren't any students in the area." The A Niche-rated Iowa City Community School District is also a big draw for homebuyers.

Highly rated public schools within the Iowa City Community School District
Weber Elementary School is directly east of the community, and children often walk to it. The school has a B-plus Niche rating. North West Junior High School is 4-½ miles north. It has a B rating. West High School is 2 miles northeast of the neighborhood. It has an A-plus Niche rating and a solid athletic program. The high school's boys and girls soccer teams have a combined 11 state championship titles. The University of Iowa is 2-½ miles to the neighborhood's northeast. The school has roughly 30,000 undergraduates and postgraduates.

The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art hosts events for the young and old alike, including writing and sketching workshops. The University of Iowa's NCAA Division I sports teams face their rivals about 3 miles northeast of Southwest Estates. "University of Iowa games are a big deal for people who live there," Westfall says. During football season, close to 70,000 fans pack into Kinnick Stadium to root for the Hawkeyes. The college's wrestling, gymnastics and basketball teams compete at the campus' Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Slothower Road Park is directly west of Southwest Estates. "Slothower Road Park is not developed yet. It just has some native plants," says Tyler Baird, Iowa City's superintendent of Parks & Forestry. Hunter's Run Park is half a mile east of Southwest Estates. Hunter's Run has a prairie space, a playground, trails and picnic tables. "Residents walk to both of these parks," Baird says.

Southwest Estates' streets are lined with sidewalks. Because the community is so removed from commerce, the sidewalks are mainly used for leisurely strolls. The Iowa City Downtown District is 4 miles northeast of Southwest Estates via Rohret Road and West Benton Street. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is 3-½ miles northeast of Southwest Estates. Cedar Rapids is 26 miles north via Interstate 380, and the city is home to Eastern Iowa Airport, which offers domestic flights. There are bus stops on Wild Prairie Drive and Rohret Road.
