Ty N Cae
Suburban Neighborhood in Iowa City, Iowa
Johnson County 52246
Big backyard gardens and blackbirds
Along Ty N Cae's quiet streets, buyers find newly renovated duplexes, ranch-style homes, split-levels, New Traditional two-stories and custom homes. Most properties sell between $200,000 and $400,000, with condominiums in the north hovering closer to $200,000 and homes in the south averaging around $350,000. Although lots across the neighborhood are spacious, homes closer to the tree lines have larger backyards that residents use to fulfill their interests. Pfohl says, "The house on the other side of us, they put a pickleball court in their backyard. Another neighbor has the most wonderful garden with eight or nine different fruit trees." In her own backyard, Pfohl has a path lined with little ceramic figurines. She invites residents to walk through her backyard to admire them, and many locals have made a game out of hiding her figurines in other parts of the path for the next visitors to find. People also see plenty of wildlife in their yards, from woodpeckers and blackbirds to even the occasional beaver waddling toward Willow Creek.Ty N Cae neighbors come together to celebrate
As the neighborhood's president, Pfohl does as much as she can to get neighbors connected with one another. "We do Christmas caroling every year and try to have meetings in the park. It can be up to 30 to 40 people sometimes." Pfohl also says that Ty N Cae is the kind of community where people wave at each other and stop to chat even if they're unacquainted. A major sewer and street narrowing project was just completed in the neighborhood, but while construction was ongoing, people ensured the workers felt welcomed. "I borrowed one of the neighbor's wagons and took Gatorade out to them on the hot days," Pfohl says. "Lots of other people did too. The workers said they had never had people come out and provide them with things like we did." After the project was completed, the community also came together for a block party celebration. "Everybody brought dishes, and people shared recipes and talked about places they traveled to," Pfohl says. "Some of the high school kids invited their friends to play the games that were set up. We had a karaoke machine, but no one used it because everyone just wanted to sit around and talk."Bike trails connect Willow Creek and Kiwanis
Ty N Cae is bordered by two large green spaces: Willow Creek Park and Kiwanis Park. The two are connected via a winding paved bike trail. At Willow Creek, Pfohl says, "Young kids will meet to play together, and you'll see pickup games of soccer and frisbee. There's also a hill that's really good for tobogganing when we have snow." Kiwanis Park has an equally popular playground, but Pfohl says many people visit for its community garden. Plot registration starts in March every year, and gardening season lasts from mid-April to mid-October. Roughly 1 mile north is Finkbine Golf Course, the University of Iowa's collegiate team golf course that's also open to the public.Fareway Meat and Grocery around the corner
While no retail centers are within the neighborhood, a shopping center is right around the corner. Fareway Meat and Grocery and Al Salam International Foods fill up pantries, while Hartig Drug offers pharmacy and convenience store items. Java House Coffee Roasters is popular for a morning espresso and pastry, while its sister company, Heirloom Salad Co., draws a lunchtime crowd with its sandwich and salad combos. There's also Tequila Grill, which serves authentic Mexican food, and Coaches Corner, a laidback bar and grill. For more options, Ty N Cae is within 2 miles of a Menards, Walmart Supercenter and more dining along Highway 6.Faculty member residents 2 miles from U of I
Students attend Horn Elementary School, followed by Northwest Junior High School. Both schools earn a B Niche rating; however, Niche ranks Northwest Junior as the fourth best public middle school in Johnson County. Older students attend West High School, which has an A-plus rating and engineering programs offered in partnership with the University of Iowa. Niche ranks it as the best public high school in Iowa. While not many University of Iowa students live in Ty N Cae, some faculty members do. The neighborhood is only 2 miles from the university, offering a quick commute without needing to live directly beside the campus.Route 218 leads to Cedar Rapids
While Ty N Cae is tucked into Iowa City's west side, it's only 2 miles from Downtown Iowa City. It's also 1 mile from U.S. Route 218, a major highway leading to Coralville and beyond. Pfohl says it is especially convenient for residents who commute to Cedar Rapids. People can also get around via bus stops and bike lanes along Mormon Trek Boulevard. For flights, the Eastern Iowa Airport is 21 miles north.
