Luzerne Township has community ties in a rural Pennsylvania setting

Alongside the winding Monongahela River about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh is the township of Luzerne. Containing vast farmland and dense forests, Luzerne is a quiet, rural region with a modest population of just about 5,600 residents on the western edge of Fayette County. "It’s very nice and it’s quiet," says local Realtor Jamie Santore of Tri County Realty Associates, who has sold over 100 homes throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. "Having kids there is nice because you know the whole area. Everybody knows everybody there." Rural township with strong community ties and scenic views

Ranch-styles, cottages and Tudors dot the hilly countryside

Ranch-styles are common throughout Luzerne, though there are also cottages and Tudor homes, particularly in the more remote sections of the township. Older single-story homes typically price between $75,000 to $200,000 while newer, 1,500-square-foot builds can top out closer to $300,000. The housing market is relatively competitive in Luzerne, though some homes may take several months to sell. "If it’s priced where it should be, it could go within a month or maybe two months, but some homes can sit for a while," Santore says.

Local diners, convenience stores and drive-in movies draw residents

Locals often travel 8 miles north to pick up fresh groceries from Walmart Supercenter off Highway 40. Penncraft Market is a staple for Luzerne locals. A convenience store, bakery and deli under one single roof, the roadside market is a hot spot for residents to purchase prepared food or order specialty cakes and sandwich platters. Fat Angelo's is a local pizza chain with locations throughout Western Pennsylvania. Route 40 Classic Diner is another hot spot serving burgers and fries.
A stone's throw from the diner, Brownsville Drive-In is one of Luzerne's top attractions. Without an indoor movie theater in the township's vicinity, locals flock to the drive-in to catch the latest blockbuster flicks while munching on foods from the concession stand.
