A little town under starry skies

Jacksonville is a small hamlet 8 miles northwest of Ithaca that sits along New York State Route 96. It is a small community of about 200 homes nestled among crystal lakes, rolling hills, fields and forests. The little town is quiet enough to feel like a rural farming community, one where the night sky is filled with stars; and yet, it’s close enough to downtown Ithaca and Cornell University for an easy commute. “Jacksonville’s draw is both its location and convenience. It’s a great ‘between’ space. While it is only 10-minutes to downtown, it is also close to farmland, recreation areas and Cayuga Lake,” says Chelsey Smith, a Realtor with REMAX In Motion, who grew up in the area. As a result, Jacksonville has a diverse mix of residents, from farmers to professors.

Plenty of access to the great outdoors

Jacksonville Community Park is a small green space with benches and a little pond just off Route 96. Three miles from Jacksonville is Taughannock Falls State. The park is home to a 215-foot waterfall. The park offers unforgettable views of the rim and gorge, a multi-use trail popular with hikers and cross-country skiers and provides beach access to Cayuga Lake. Residents are also close to the Black Diamond Trailhead. The 8.5-mile trail follows the upper slopes of Cayuga Lake and is considered an easy hike and suitable for families with children. Jacksonville is just 4 miles from the Cayuga Nature Center, which provides outdoor and indoor exhibits and programs that explain the natural history of Cayuga Lake and regional ecosystems. The nature center has a six-story treehouse, a waterfall and several hiking trails. Hillandale Golf Course is an 18-hole public course just under 3 miles from Jacksonville.

Jacksonville students attend Trumansburg schools

Children in Jacksonville may begin schooling at Trumansburg Elementary School, which has a B rating and an 11-1 student-teacher ratio. Russell I. Doig Middle School has an 8-1 student-teacher ratio and scores a B. Charles O. Dickerson High School has a B-plus rating and a 9-1 student-teacher ratio. The high school has an advanced placement program and several athletic and scholastic clubs.

Homes are on Highway 96

Most homes in Jacksonville are found close together along Route 96. “Homes here sit on smaller lots than the surrounding area, usually on just a few acres to less than an acre,” says Smith. “As for home styles, there is a little bit of everything here.” The most common homes are colonials, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes. Many homes are over 100 years old. Colonial homes built during the 1800s may sell for between $382,000 and $645,000. Prospective homebuyers can expect to pay between $250,000 and $450,000 for a three-bedroom Cape Cod.

Nearby shops and a historic bed and breakfast

Two miles up Highway 96, is a shopping area that includes a Sunoco, a Shur Save food store and the Trumansburg Wine and Spirits shop. Wegmans and Walmart are about 11 miles south for larger grocery shopping trips. Halsey House is a historic bed and breakfast set in a gracious Greek Revival mansion built in 1829. Many locals head to Trumansburg to go shopping and dine out. One Green Horse is a used bookstore that welcomes people in to peruse the books. Falls Restaurant and Tavern serves homemade soups and grilled steaks.

Community picnics and local fairs

The hamlet of Jacksonville sponsors a community picnic during the summer at the Jacksonville Community Park. Since 1850, the Trumansburg Fair in nearby Trumansburg has provided six days of agricultural, educational and music events, amusement rides and even a rodeo. During the winter months, the Jacksonville Methodist Church sponsors a craft fair.

Easy access to urban conveniences

Jacksonville is a car-dependent neighborhood. It is 5 miles from Cayuga Medical Center and 8 miles from downtown Ithaca and Cornell University. All are reached via NY Highway 96. Ithaca Tompkins International Airport is 12 miles away. TCAT bus service runs daily between Trumansburg and Ithaca.
