A close-knit and engaged neighborhood
Ithaca’s North Side is a triangular-shaped community bounded by Cascadilla Creek to the east, Route 13 to the west, and Cascadilla Street to the south. The mostly residential neighborhood of apartments, multi- and single-family homes was developed in the 1930s after the city rerouted Cascadilla Creek and drained the land around it. The original residents of North Side were a congenial mix of shop owners, professionals and working-class people. Today, the neighborhood still reflects a wide diversity of engaged residents and businesses. “This is a close-knit, very involved neighborhood,” says Yusuf Broaster, the director of Sedia’s Art Space, a local arts venue where local artists can do their residency. “It’s a place people fall in love with. There’s so much natural beauty. I can walk in any direction and end up at the water’s edge. We’re also within walking distance of area schools and just five minutes from the Ithaca Farmers Market.”
