Ithaca collar neighborhood near Cayuga Medical Center and recreation
Northwest Ithaca's main appeal is access to the Cayuga Medical Center and Ithaca’s natural spaces within the Finger Lakes region of Central New York. Though many are affiliated with the hospital, residents enjoy the neighborhood’s sparse feel while being less than 4 miles from Downtown. “Northwest Ithaca is not crowded at all,” says Johan Dulfer, a local broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeService Heritage Realty. “It has somewhat of a suburban feel, but it’s much more spread out, and still only 3 minutes from Downtown.” Proximity to modern amenities balances with the easy access to expansive parks, wooded trails, and waterfront access to Cayuga Lake through nearby marinas.
Recreation in Ithaca’s Finger Lakes region
Northwest Ithaca residents enjoy proximity to Cayuga Lake and Ithaca’s natural spaces, which offer an abundance of recreational opportunities. For waterfront activities, boaters head to the Cayuga Cliffside Marina or Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, which has a year-round boat launch and seasonally open marina. “The Black Diamond Trail is a great place to start a run or bike ride,” Dulfer says of the pathway that parallels Route 89. “It leads right to Trumansburg and Taughannock Falls State Park.” Located 6 miles north of the neighborhood, the sprawling 750-acre state park is a destination for camping, fishing and lakeside activities. The Taughannock Falls 215-foot waterfall also attracts park visitors and photographers. Cass Park’s 138 acres sit just east of the neighborhood along Cayuga Lake, providing locals with a plethora of recreational opportunities. Once the grounds of a former municipal airport, the bustling park now features an arena for ice skating or roller skating, 32 athletic fields and waterfront trails. Its fields range from baseball diamonds to soccer fields and fill with players daily, while the Olympic-sized pool is a hotspot for families during the summer.
