Residential neighborhood just off Interstate 75 along the lake

At the feet of High Falls State Park and along the shores of High Falls Lake is Towaliga Shores, a small, primarily residential neighborhood. “Everybody’s friendly,” says Jasmine Moore, an employee at family-owned store Clint & Company Hardware who previously lived in the neighborhood. “Most people if they see someone walking, they’ll check on them and then go about their day.” Towaliga Shores has an overall crime score of 2 from the CAP Index, lower than the national average of 4. The state park itself is halfway between the metro areas of Macon and Atlanta, with the community about a mile off Interstate 75. “It’s more of a generational area,” says Moore. “When people come here for vacation, they tend to not leave.”

1,000 acres of outdoor recreation at High Falls State Park

With over 1,000-acres, High Falls State Park was made a state park in 1966. The state park was once an industrial town with a gristmill and a hydroelectric power plant among other prosperous businesses. In the 1880s, a railroad was constructed in nearby Jackson, and the town soon became a ghost town. The park today has several campgrounds with electric and water hookups, as well as lakeside yurts. The state park is also home to the tallest-cascading waterfall south of Atlanta. High Falls Lake, at 650-acres, has boat ramps and fishing docks scattered around the lake.

Manufactured homes with wood heating under the cover of trees

Oftentimes home sit on smaller lots under the shade of multiple mature trees. “There are both old homes and a lot of people do buy the run-down houses to tear them down,” says Moore. “But there are more trailers.” Trailers, also known as manufactured homes, tend to sit closer to the road and have gravel driveways. “The county is so strict on what people do on the [exteriors], but the [interiors] are all renovated,” Moore says. A manufactured home built in 1987 with three-bedrooms and two-bathrooms sold for $155,000. Homes here rarely go on sale, with only three homes having been sold in 2024. Other housing styles include ranch-style, which sold for $240,000, and Colonial Revival, which sold for $259,000. These ones have carports attached to the side of homes. While the area offers central heating in homes, “there’s a lot of people out here who use wood instead of central heating because of the outrageous prices,” Moore says.

High Falls State Park hosts outdoor activities where children can learn about the animals within the park, scavenger hunts and even holiday events like Halloween Glow-in-the-Dark Mini Golf. “The hardware store as a company tries to do little things,” Moore says.
