Worthville’s lake homes are removed from Atlanta’s crowds
People often move to Butts County to get out of Atlanta and its congested suburbs. Worthville, a community covering the northern end of the county and the western shoreline of Jackson Lake, has an added appeal, says Kim Freshwater, an agent at Century 21 Crowe Realty and a county resident. “The lake is a whole different thing,” she says. “It’s a getaway. You have people who live there full time and seasonal residents.” There’s plenty of open water in the 4,750-acre lake for motorboats to cruise, while narrow inlets provide tucked-away fishing spots. Worthville residents enjoy lake recreation and a rural setting that’s 50 miles from downtown Atlanta.
Lakeside living in Butts County
Homes are more common near Jackson Lake, where subdivisions of ranches and bungalows, along with custom houses, were built on or near the shoreline. To the west, homes lack lake access, but they tend to be newer, with nearly half built since 2000. Across Worthville, houses usually come with spacious properties; the median lot size is about an acre. Prices generally vary from $225,000 to $645,000. However, large lakefront houses can sell between $675,000 and $1.8 million.
The CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Fishing, boating and concerts on Jackson Lake
Many lakefront homes come with private docks, great for storing boats or fishing for bass and catfish. Lake access is limited for those who don’t live on the water, Freshwater says. However, the public can fish from the pier at Lloyd Shoals Park or launch their boats or jet skis from the marinas dotting the shoreline.
In the spring and summer, boaters navigate their vessels into Concert Cove to see bands perform on a lakefront stage. The Jackson Lake Summer Concert Series brings bands and boats to this small bay every Saturday afternoon from May to July. Plus, the Jackson Lake Association organizes a poker run every year.
Attending the Butts County School System
The public schools to which Worthville children are zoned are located about 5 miles south in Jackson. Niche grades Stark Elementary a C-plus and gives Henderson Middle a B-minus. Teens at B-minus-rated Jackson High can take band, chorus and drama classes that utilize the school’s 1,000-seat performing arts center that opened in 2023.
Waterfront dining in Worthville and a walkable town square in Jackson
People can drive up or boat to Fire & Ice, an American-style restaurant and bar with a deck facing Reasor’s Landing marina. Residents may also go out to eat in neighboring Jackson, the county seat. TV fans might recognize Jackson's town square, where the series "Stranger Things" filmed scenes of the fictional downtown Hawkins, Indiana. While Melvald’s General Store and the Hideaway bar line the square in the show, businesses like Bradley’s on the Square and Mulberry Drugs fill the real-life storefronts. People can run errands at Jackson’s Ingles Market and Dollar General, or they can head north to the Publix in McDonough.
Commuters use I-75 and express lanes to reach Atlanta
About 10 miles west of Worthville, an on-ramp leads to Interstate 75. Drivers can take the interstate to Atlanta, a trip that may take up to an hour and a half due to the metro’s notorious gridlock. However, commuters can pay to use toll lanes and speed up the drive. “If you’re coming from McDonough, you can take the express lane and bypass all of it,” Freshwater says. “It carries you all the way up to Clayton County.”
