Suburban Jackson neighborhood in growing entertainment hub

Jackson Mayor Scott Conger’s vision for the area around Interstate 40 and North Highland Avenue is “to turn it into a welcome mat, laid out for our city.” Lawrence—or Ridgecrest, as some here might call it—is located among the neighborhoods that the city wants to develop into an entertainment hub. Lawrence sits right between the Old Hickory Mall and the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex, and while the mall has declined over the years, there are plans to bring life back into this pocket with the addition of a massive event complex that would include a 6,500-seat multi-use arena. In addition, the Great Wolf Lodge is looking to open its newest location near the Sportsplex, a move that will put many here within minutes of an indoor water park and resort. “That area is growing, with retail things popping up because of those ballparks. There are all kinds of things popping up out there, as well as motels and so on,” says Jane Betts, a Realtor with Town and Country Realtors.

Ranch-styles and contemporary Traditional houses on multi-acre lots

Like other Jackson communities around I-40, Lawrence is a primarily residential neighborhood consisting of smaller subdivisions. Some lots here exceed 1 acre and feature professionally landscaped gardens and decorative light fixtures. Some properties also come with large tree-shaded backyards ideal for hosting weekend parties. Spanning a few generations, the houses range from mid-20th century era ramblers to contemporary two-story Traditional homes. Colonial Revivals are also common here, including a few donning Greek Revival influences. Single-family homes in Lawrence cost from $220,000 for a 1,700-square-foot house to just over $500,000 for a home more than double that size. For those even larger houses situated on multi-acre lots, price points can occasionally exceed $800,000.

Asian fare and downhome cooking on both sides of the neighborhood

The shopping center east of the neighborhood is home to a mix of chains and local businesses. Jiang Jun serves a blend of Chinese and Japanese fare and has separate menus for both types of cuisines. Regulars here can choose between various lo mein plates or go for sushi and sashimi orders. Los Portales serves Tex-Mex fare and is a short walk from Clifton Brothers BBQ. The barbecue restaurant’s menu includes trays of ribs and delicacies like pork rinds. Several dining options also exist around the Old Hickory Mall. The Catfish Galley is known for its fried fish and hush puppies. For more Asian fare, there are prepared meals and an assortment of sushi available at the Sakura Japanese Restaurant. Kroger and Food Giant are two of the nearest grocery shopping options.

Home to city destination in Muse Park

A section of Muse Park falls within the Lawrence neighborhood. A popular city destination, this 100-acre green space’s amenities include forest trails, a disc golf course and basketball courts. Many visitors also enjoy sitting on the docks around the pond to take in some relaxing views of the water. A pedestrian bridge over North Parkway leads to the Muse Skate Park. Sitting just outside the neighborhood, Sky Zone draws many from across the region. “It’s kind of cool because when you go in there, it’s all different kinds of sections,” says Amanda Moss, who doesn’t live in Jackson but often comes into the city to take her children to Sky Zone. “It’s got dodgeball, it’s got regular jump zones, it’s got jump zones for smaller kids. It’s cool.” The venue neighbors the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex, which consists of 17 baseball and softball fields across 70 acres. Pets at Dr. Vicki Schneider Lake Dog Park can roam between tall patches of trees and even jump on some of the equipment set up around the site.

Close to summertime Jackson Rockabillys games

The Jackson Baseball Stadium has long put the neighborhood close to ball games. Formerly the home of the now-defunct Jackson Generals, the 6,000-seat ballpark currently hosts summer games for the Jackson Rockabillys. The team plays in the Prospect League, which is entirely made up of college players. The stadium hosts other celebrations, such as the Jackson Brew Fest in October. Those attending the event can sample craft and home brews and buy works from local artists.
