Jackson neighborhood with anchor hospital
The area near Russell Road in Westwood Gardens once carried the nickname “Pill Hill” due to the many doctors who lived in the stylish early 20th-century houses there. While Westwood Gardens is no longer known by this moniker, the neighborhood does continue to attract many medical professionals and residents in need of care due to the community's proximity to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. In addition to being located within the neighborhood, the hospital also has the distinction of being the only tertiary care center between Nashville and Memphis. “The hospital is the reason. I’ve had clients come in here and tell me over and over and over again, ‘my mother is older, she’s moving here and we need to be closer to the clinic,” says Robert Eatman, an Realtor with Town and Country Realtors. “And it’s just not the hospitals. It’s every clinic that’s around. Dermatology, bone and joint, cancer center.”

Hilly neighborhood with raised ranch-style houses
Shaded by a canopy of tall mature trees, many houses here sit on quarter-acre lots and feature artfully landscaped garden beds and hedges. Some of the hilly landscape makes way for raised ranch-style houses with front entrances on the upper floors. Many of these houses’ bottom floors have also been opened to create carports. Other common styles in the neighborhood include mid-century designs and Craftsman bungalows, and some houses feature distinct accents like slanted skillion or mansard roofs. “They’re also putting in a lot of short-term rentals because of the hospital staff coming in and out. They just want a room and kitchen, and that’s it,” says Jane Betts, a Realtor with Town and Country Realtors, who bought her first home in that area. Housing footprints here can run from about 1,400 square feet to over 2,000 square feet and depending on size and condition, price points can range from about $180,000 to just under $300,000.

Downhome cooking at Catfish Galley and seafood boils at Red Hook
Westwood Gardens sits just south of the Old Hickory Mall, which anchors the area with several major retail chains like JCPenny and Belk. Local eateries here include the Catfish Galley, where patrons enjoy down-home cooking like fried catfish, hush puppies, fried okra and baked potatoes. Also close to the neighborhood is Jackson’s sole Red Hook Cajun Seafood, a small regional chain with locations mostly in the Memphis area. The restaurant is popular for its gumbo and large platters featuring snow crab and lobster. “I’m all for the boils here, the bag boils. They’re great. You can add to them, and choose whatever you want in them,” says Red Hook server Amanda Moss. Both Sam’s Club and Walmart are a few miles north and provide grocery shopping options. And although the Old Hickory Mall has declined over the years, city leaders hope to bring life back into the area with plans to build a convention center to attract additional restaurants and hotels.
