Sprawling suburban homes south of Jacksonville

About 17 miles south of downtown Jacksonville, the once-forgotten ghost town of Greenland offers a quiet lifestyle on plenty of land. First established after the Civil War, the area’s development remained mostly stagnant until the 19th century, when the construction of the Halifax River Railway and turpentine production drove Greenland’s Economy. Today, descendants of the same forest pine trees used to make that turpentine cover this residential suburb, and the old Halifax train tracks run along the eastern side of the neighborhood near Philips Highway. Dana Hancock, a Realtor with Re/Max Specialists in the Greenland area says, “A lot of times, people end up here because of little to no HOA fees and bigger lots compared to the greater Jax area.”

Ranch-style homes with up to three bedrooms and two-car garages average $350,000, featuring brick accent exteriors and fenced-in backyards with enough space for a swing set. Wide cul-de-sacs and streets are lined with well-paved sidewalks, and homes are separated by oak and palm trees next to small, shallow creeks just a short walk away. Sprawling new traditional homes average $510,000, featuring arched entryways, larger fenced-in lots and glass-enclosed pools.
