Isle of Palms
Life on the water in Isle of Palms
Recreation revolves around the neighborhood’s channels and creeks. Even if a house doesn’t have a backyard dock housing a boat, it may have a vessel sitting in the driveway. Those who live on the Intracoastal spend their afternoons and weekends cruising the waterways, making stops at their neighbors’ docks or mooring at a waterfront restaurant. Residents who don’t live on the water can put in at Palm Cove Marina, less than a mile north of Isle of Palms. Locals sometimes get competitive with their docks, making them bigger and adding relaxation decks. “People go nuts on their docks,” Sessions says. “One person will go huge, so the other person wants to go bigger.” Meanwhile, Isle of Palms Park has seen a renewal in interest in recent years, Sessions adds. Pickleball courts draw players, while a playground added in 2023 gives kids something to do.Drinks at Pura Bean named for regulars
Some locals moor their boats at Dockside Seafood Restaurant, where they can eat the day’s fresh catch so close to the water that they may have to dodge seagulls hungry for uneaten scraps. Less than a mile outside the neighborhood, an orange ‘79 Volkswagen bus welcomes people to Pura Bean Coffee Co. Inside, customers banter with the barista as she makes their drinks and pulls house-made corned beef from the display case. Chalked on the blackboard, coffee concoctions such as “The Kelly” and “Theresa’s Treat” are named after regulars. Parishioners from nearby Church of Eleven22 fill the café on Sundays. A window in the back offers a peak into the roastery, where founder Chris Diedrich readies the beans. Across the street, locals can shop at Publix or work out at Dynamic Fitness. On the opposite side of the neighborhood, Mayo Clinic in Florida is ranked the best hospital in the state. In fact, Sessions says some homebuyers move to the neighborhood because they plan to receive long-term care from Mayo Clinic.Proximity to the Intracoastal influences home prices
Homes are defined by their proximity to the Intracoastal. Some properties sit along the Intracoastal, where homeowners can put boats in the water, while others border tidal creeks only wide enough to launch kayaks or canoes. Some houses back up to rustic marshland, while others have no waterfront at all. Many of the midcentury ranch homes first built in the neighborhood still stand, though some were knocked down and replaced with more contemporary styles. Select streets are gated for additional privacy, such as the newly built enclave called Palm Island. Prices climb the closer a house is to the Intracoastal; a three-bedroom inland home may cost $400,000, while a newer house on the Intracoastal can fetch more than $3 million. Flood zones extend throughout the neighborhood, so homeowners may need flood insurance. Residents live in a special taxing district, so they pay additional taxes that fund the dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway.Fletcher High teaches entrepreneurship and IT
Students are zoned to Duval County Public Schools, which gets a grade of B from Niche. Kids can start at Seabreeze Elementary School and Duncan U. Fletcher Middle School, both graded B-plus. At A-minus-rated Duncan U. Fletcher High School, teens can take career-focused courses on accounting, entrepreneurship and information technology. All three campuses are between 4 and 5 miles from the center of Isle of Palms. This is a school choice district, meaning parents can apply for their children to attend schools they’re not zoned to.Visits from Santa at Isle of Palms Park
Homeowners association fees fund visits from Santa Claus, who rides through the streets in a firetruck every December. The truck parks at Isle of Palms Park, where Saint Nick poses for photos with children and families. Locals can also check out well-attended Jacksonville events, such as the Riverside Arts Market. Every Saturday, artisans, farmers and food trucks set up 20 miles west of the neighborhood, where visitors will likely see Diedrich serving Pura Bean coffee. “In 10 years, I’ve missed two markets,” he says.Getting around by golf cart, bike and more
When residents aren’t boating around, they may be navigating the neighborhood by golf cart or cycling the 2-mile trek to Jacksonville Beach. “The goal is to try and not be in your car,” Sessions says. “You go to a friend's house on a boat, a bike, a Onewheel, a golf cart or walking.” Still, commuters need to hop in their cars to take J. Turner Butler Boulevard or Beach Boulevard to downtown, 15 miles away. Interstate 295 connects to Jacksonville International Airport, 25 miles away.
