African American Union soldiers and freedmen settled the land after the Civil War. "The LaVilla area thrived during reconstruction and became an entertainment and music destination with a significant blues and jazz history," says Mitch Hemann, the local Ritz Theatre & Museum archivist. The community lays claim to the first advertised blues performance in the country and attracted the likes of singing legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.
