LaVilla/Brooklyn is a neighborhood with historic ties
On Saturdays in LaVilla/Brooklyn, downtown residents can visit the Riverside Arts Market, followed by a rooftop burrito or aged spirits at the local distillery. This neighborhood was a historically Black community in the 19th and early 20th centuries, known for its cultural and artistic significance. African American Union soldiers and freedmen settled the land after the Civil War. "The LaVilla area thrived during reconstruction and became an entertainment and music destination with a significant blues and jazz history," says Mitch Hemann, the local Ritz Theatre & Museum archivist. The community lays claim to the first advertised blues performance in the country and attracted the likes of singing legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong.
Townhouses along Jacksonville streets
LaVilla/Brooklyn was a primarily residential area but, over time, has developed into a bustling commercial corridor. Although the neighborhood does maintain a few houses, residences today consist mainly of apartment complexes, lofts and townhouses. Most dwellings enter the LaVilla/Brooklyn market between $175,000 to $375,000 on average. The Johnson Commons development offers brand new townhouses, which range from the lower to upper $300,000s.
Local staples for shopping and dining in LaVilla/Brooklyn
The Brooklyn section has been considered a part of the city's central business district since the 20th century. It continues to be a site for new retail developments such as Brooklyn Station and Unity Plaza. Locals can shop for groceries at Fresh Market and pick up their favorite Tex-Mex entrees at the dining staple Burrito Gallery. Here, you can get stuffed burritos and mouth-watering tacos while enjoying an elevated view of the downtown from the balcony. Ashley Street, a place where you could once catch blues and vaudeville performances, is currently filled with business offices and a few historic landmarks. One restaurant, Starving Like Marvin, serves comforting soul food such as bowls of shrimp, grits and fried fish. The locally-run Burlock and Barrel Distillery is gaining popularity for its "grain to grass" process and whiskey tastings.
Recreation close to the St. Johns River
Underneath the Interstate 95 overpass is home to the Riverside Arts Market, where you'll find local artists, vendors, and food trucks. Some lucky visitors can spot a few dolphins playing in the brackish St. Johns River. Along the water is Northbank River Walk & Corkscrew Park. In addition to relaxing views of the river, the 2-mile stretch has shoreline canoe launches, sculptures, and workout equipment. Following this walking path leads to Sidney J. Gefen Riverwalk Park, where locals can take Zumba classes once a week.
Duval County Public Schools serves the area
Young residents can start their educational journey at John E. Ford K-8 School, which promises a unique English and Spanish Montessori program and earns a C-plus rating from Niche. William M. Raines High offers career and technical education programs for students interested in Culinary Arts or Computer Science. The local performing arts school has a rich history within the community. "Ray Charles spent some of his teenage years in LaVilla and said he came into his voice here. The house he was staying at is now the same location as the LaVilla School of the Arts," Hemann says. The middle school and its students have achieved numerous accolades over the years, as well as a B-plus rating. LaVilla/Brooklyn is rooted in the arts and has blossomed into a vibrant, multifaceted community part of central Jacksonville's cultural scene.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
