Royal Terrace

Midcentury bungalows, ranch-style homes and new constructions
Narrow, riddled sidewalks outline the rectangular city blocks in Royal Terrace. Most homes date back to the mid-to-late 20th century. Bungalows and ranch-style houses are the most common architectural styles. The midcentury bungalows feature wide front porches flanked by white columns, while other ranch-style homes have concrete walkways leading straight to front doors. Some New Traditional houses were added in the early 2000s, and developers began remodeling some of the fixer-upper homes in 2023. Parking can vary depending on a property's age. There are some ranch-style homes with breezy carports and bungalows with narrow driveways. The New Traditional houses feature freshly paved driveways that lead to attached garages. "Your dollar is going to go a little further over there," Philip Amorgianos says. A local Realtor with Watson Realty Corp, he says prices are "much more affordable here than a lot of other places in town." Most listings range between $125,000 to $225,000, but some aging homes can go for under $100,000.Moncrief Road links to U.S. Highway 1
Moncrief Road is a main throughway running along the neighborhood's east side. It quickly links to U.S. Highway 1, which connects to the Jacksonville Amtrak Station in about 5 miles. Just 2 miles outside Royal Terrace, Highway 1 intersects with Interstate 95. From here, Jacksonville International Airport is about 10 miles north, and UF Health Jacksonville is less than a mile south. While driving downtown is easy, residents avoid expensive parking fees using the city's fixed-route bus system. The closest stops are found along Moncrief Road, Avenue B and West 45th Street.Crosswalks connect to Edgewood Square
Crosswalks connect the neighborhood to a small shopping center called Edgewood Square. It has a Harveys Supermarket, a Little Caesars Pizza and a locally owned Chinese take-out spot. On the east side of Royal Terrace, Moncrief Liquor & Lounge is a hole-in-the-wall bar where neighbors catch up with friends and listen to old-school tunes. Family Dollar sits about a half-mile down the road.New renovations at the Clanzel T. Brown Community Center
"Athletics are big in this community. There are basketball courts all over, a swimming pool, and tons of park space for people to visit," says Kennedy. Narrow sidewalks connect to a fenced-in park along Benedict Road. Eponymously named Royal Terrace Park, the community green space has a large gazebo overlooking a turf-surface playground and a concrete basketball court. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida opened a new location directly across from the neighborhood in 2021. Once an abandoned government building, the Clanzel T. Brown Community Center now features a STEM and robotics lab, a computer room and even a recording studio. In 2023, the Club added a multi-use athletic field with a sports clinic for local kids.Culinary Arts programs at William M. Raines High
Students are zoned for Duval County Public Schools. Northwestern Legends Elementary sits along West 45th Street in Royal Terrace. It receives a C-minus on Niche. Springfield Middle has an intensive math and science magnet program that earns an overall B-minus. William M. Raines High scores a C and offers two career programs specializing in the Culinary Arts and Computer Science.Crime
Royal Terrace has a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Higher-than-average scores for violent crimes inflate the overall Crime Score. In September 2023, the City Council dedicated over $400 million from the annual budget to fund public safety. Along with improving roads and other public spaces, the money created 40 more police positions at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in 2024.
